Friday, December 7, 1973 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven Friday, December 7, 1 973 THE MICHIGAN DA.ILY- -P-g- -e-e- 'Chicago 7' members spared jail sentences C H I C A G O, (Reuter) - in a quiet, formal colrtroom scene -- a stark contrast to their up- roariois riot conspiracy trial four years ago - three members of the "Chicago Seven" and a defense lawyer, found guilty of contempt of court, were yester- day spared going to jail. Judge Edward Gignoux, who presided over the four-week con- -' rtempt trial, pointed out that three "'i of the defendants had already spent brief periods in prison for contempt and said he could see no purpose in sending them back to jail four years after the event. vThe contempt trial stemmed from outbreaks of chanting and shouting and repeated interrup- tions when the "Seven" stood trial four years ago accused of conspiring to riot during the 1968 Democratic Party Conven- tion here. THE FOUR DEFENDANTS - Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, ; Abbie Hoffman and Defense Law- yer William Kunstler - could each have been sentenced to a maximum of 177 days imprison- ment on the contempt charges. Only two of the accused, Kunst- ler and Rubin, were in the court- room to hear the judge read his ter, decision. Gignoux said Dellinger GROUP GUITAR LESSONS 6 Consecutive Weeks, Materials Included, ONLY $12.00 We also teach flute, banlo, recorder, boss, sax, drums, piano, oboe, and clarinet. Two other members of the "Seven" - Tom Hayden and Rennie Davis - and D e f e n s e Counsel Leonard Weinglass were earlier this week found not guil- ty of contempt of court. Similar charges against the remaining two members of the "Seven," Lee Weiner and John Froines, were dismissed during t h e month-old contempt trial. GIGNOUX SAID he was most appreciative of the civility shown by counsel on both sides in the latest trial.
