You have to know that,'" Fleming says. Presently undisturbed by the "sometimes unpleasant" admin- istrative emergencies of the six- ties, Fleming has time to reflect on general directions of the Uni- versity. His turn of mind is patently academic-moral, delib-. crate and always reasonable. Concerned about the issues raised by the Watergate case and such recent exposes as David Halberstam's "The Best and the Brightest," Fleming says oneof . the problems he devotes most thought to is the American edu- cational system's apparent fail- ure to instil moral convictions. "What is wrong with our soci- ety that people don't seem to have the kind of values you'd like them to have? We'd like to think we stress honesty, yirtue, integ- rity, but we see over and over again people doing things that are very disturbing." Fleming admits "Having said we're unsuccessful, I don't know what we should do to be success- ful." On a more specific level, the President seems eminently satis- fied with the University's present situation. While the black enroll- ment level of 10 per cent pledged for this year during the BAM strike has not been met, Fleming calls the 8.> per cent figure ex- pected this lfall adequate. He ex- plains the University has to walk a line between advocates of high- er black- admissions and critics who blame the administration for admittin Ulmi ied minority students. "'My own impression is that the University has well and faith- fully attempted to meet our com- mitment," Fleming claims. He also expresses satisfaction with the progress toward Depart- ment of Health, Education and Felfare (IEW) standards for equal employment of minorities and women by the University, "You've got a reduced job market to deal with at the start, and on the other hand you won't 'find many minorities or women qualified in some areas." Fleming says salary equity has not proved .to be a problem for minority employes, but a number of women have been shown to be receiving discriminatory low wages. "We've been whacking away at that, trying to solve it," lFleming says, "But we can only process those as we become aware of them." As for the present financial squeeze, the President says pop- ulation statistics and other eco- nomic factors indicate it will continue at least into the 1990's for all universities. But while na- tional university enrollment is expected to drop dramatically, Fleming says, "We think if we maintain the prestige of the Uni- versity there will always be large numbers of applicants." Since President Fleming will not be in town to present his us-< ual address to the freshpersons this year, he will not be able to provide them with his advice on a successful University sojourn, r Ma "the same advice I always give my own kids." First, he says, "the hardest task for a student coming to the University is self-discipline." Second, "Most parents are pay- ing a considerable amount of money to send their child to the University. They deserve to have their young man or woman think about making constructive use of this time." And last, "While I like to see students do well, I don't think they should make grades the end all and be all of their existence." They should also "get into out- side activities."
