By ANDY GLAZER When God gets around to writ- ing the Big Ten Commandments, the first one will probably be something like "Thou shalt not tie the number one ranked team in the nation." Unless, of course, you're the Michigan Wolverine hockey team. After splitting two games with first ranked Wisconsin last weekend, the Maize and Blue icers" will be traveling north to face second ranked Michigan Tech, the owners of a 6-1-1 re- cord after having won their last four in a row. The only good team the Hus- kies have faced thus far, Notre Dame, was rather successful against them, beating them 8-4 and tying 2-2. In fact, the only reason theIrish have been able to hold onto a spot in' the top ten (they are currently ranked eighth) is their success against Tech; they are 1-4 against their other foes. The Huskies' two big guns so far are both rather diminutive centers, sophomore Mike Zuke (5-11, 170) and junior Bob D'Alvise (5-11, 175). Each has 18 points. Last year as a freshman Zuke led the Huskies in scoring (23 goals, 30 assists) and was nam- ed the Outstanding Freshman 'in the WCHA. The Wolverines re- member him well; he twice scor- ed hat tricks against them. D'Al- vise has 12 goals but only 6 as- sists; this has to bother Tech Coach John MacInnes, who want- ed D'Alvise to pass off a little more this year. The key man for Tech last year was again one of the smal- ler men on the squad, the 5'8", 175 pound Graham Wise. Wise, a senior this season, underwent surgery for a chronic shoulder problem last spring and spent the summer on a rehabilitation program. He's fit and ready now, however, and with 12 points is starting to regain the form that saw him as the Hus- kies leading goal scorer last year. One of the reisons that Mac- Innes can afford to have so many smaller skaters is senior cap- t-in Jim Nahrging. The 190 pound defenseman holds the school record for career penalty minutes (105), and hasn't done much to change that image this year; he has 32 minutes in eight games, 16 more than anyone else on the team. When he's on the ice, though, he's also quite productive, holding the school records for goals and points by a defenseman. Maybe thesHuskies should have more muscle - men but they certainly haven't been hurt in short-handed situations. This season opposing teams have scor- ed only eight power play goals in 52 chances. Amazingly, dur- ing that same period Tech itself has scored 7 short-handed goals. The main beneficiaries of that fine defense are Tech's two fine goalies, senior Rick Quance and sophomore Jim Warden. At a casual glance Warden would ap- pear to be, by far, the better of the two, sporting a 1.66 goals against average to Quance's 3.40. Quance had the misfortune, however, to be in the nets for the two Notre Dame games, where he yielded ten goals. The mere fact that MacInnes' played Quance . in both of these vital games gives a good indication of where he thinks his goaltending strength lies. Michigan leads the series be- tween the two schools, 81-56-5, but Tech has won the last 6 games. Yet when the ninth rank- ed Wolverines meet Tech up in Houghton this weekend, an in- teresting contrast will appear. Tech, 24-13-1 last year, Michi- gan, 5-28-1 last year; Tech load- ed with seniors and juniors, Michigan loaded with freshmen and sophomores. Two teams passing by one another - one on it's way to the top, one on it's way to nowhere' after this year. Don't be surprised if the Wolverines speed up Tech's de- mise a little. .j I Complete Audio Repair -i we know how to properly repair & align tape recorders "ALL MAKES & MODELS" 663 -415 2 300 S.
