With the season only four weeks old, Michigan's hockey team has already won as many games as they did all last year. And judging from their perform- ance last weekend against NCAA champion Wisconsin, there's lots more where that came from. Though the Wolverines lost Fri- day night 8-4, they were leading by a goal after two periods. And the following night they avoided their chronic late-game letdown to gain an impressive 4-1 win. Friday's loss was particularly depressing. The game started slowly, with Wisconsin's Steve Alley and Michigan's Gary Mor- rison trading tallies late in the opening period. The second per- iod saw Bob Falconer, Morrison, and Randy Trudeau offset a pair of Badger scores, and the Wol- verines headed into the final period with a 4-3 lead, much to the amazement of the 6,120 fans in Yost Ice Arena. But in the third stanza, Mich- igan suffered from a malady which has afflicted them at least three times before: weak play aned costly penalties late in the game. Wisconsin tied the game early in the period, and then ex- ploded with four unanswered , goals in eight minutes to im- press upon everyone present why spit they were ranked number on in the counti'y. B e f or e an understandabl smaller crowd on Saturday nigh the Wolverines came stormin back with their best effort V date and soundly whipped th Badgers. The visitors scored first, a 4:48 of the first period, but tha was the only time all night tha Wisconsin managed to slip on past Michigan goalie Robbi Moore. Moore was outstanding especially considering that week before he had been racke up by a Michigan State playe and sprained his knee. Time an again the little sophomore turn ed away certain goals, using hi skates, glove, ,and stick wit exciting skill. Tom Lindskog tied the gam a few minutes later with a powe play score on a pretty centerin by Falconer. The Wolverine came on strong in the middl period with Greg Natale, Di Fardig, and Angie Moretto a denting the twine. The third period starred Moore; who kicked away 16 of the 4 shots taken at him. Michiga looked very solid in all facets o the game Saturday, and espe cially satisfying was the wa they kept their penalties toa ~minimum. Now that the football team has been told to watch the Rose Bowl on TV, the hockey team has inherited sophomore wolfman Don Dufek, who played for the dekers last year and should be ready to play by the Notre Dame series.
