For in- stance, a slidedule isn't a student's b e s t friend. The UNIVERSITY CELLAR Book- store has in stock right now a wide selection of brand name calculators that make a sliderule look as out-of-date as an abacus. Why not take the time to drop by the U- CELLAR and see what the student's best friend can really do. . ' ' .aa - " :..:, -.. : \ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1973 CR ISL ER A RE NA 8:00 P.M. Though true, the thought seems almost too phenomenal to comprehend. A 3-0-1 record is norn- ing to get ecstatic about but it's a far cry from the nightmare of last year when the icers could muster only five wins all season. Coach Dan Farrell, however, says he's not surprised at all. "I'm really pleased that the system we1 are trying to use here has come! along so quickly," boasted the rookie mentor, denying astonish- mentatthis squad'sainstant suc- cess in the face of acute inexper- ience. The outlook is admittedly bright' for the young Wolverines but it is a little premature to suggest WCHA championships, national titles, or prospective showdowns with the Boston Bruins, as the icers are first compelled to meet the task of defeating Michigan State in a home and home series this weekend. The Spartans are also undefeat- ed. The East Lansingcontingent downed Western Ontario 6-1 and 4-3 and dispatched former second-rank- ed Notre Dame 8-5 and 9-S to earn an unblemished 4-0-0 mark.' "Oh, we haven't looked too bad," MSU coach Amo Bessone dully re- marked, apparently not influenced by visions of unprecedented Spar-: tan success, adding, "We got lucky against Notre Dame."y If, indeed, the key to State's. success was "luck" it was con- centrated in center Tom Ross who' tallied for seven goals and three assists in the two game series. The star sophomore, a Dearborn native, scored five times in Satur- day's contest setting an MSU Ice Arena record. As evidenced by MSU's impres- sive scoring success, the Wol- verines will be looking to choke off the Spartan scofers. "They won't skate as well as Minne- sota and hey aren't as big," Far- rell explained, 'comparing the cross-state rivals with the Goph- ers, "but they have the ability to score goals." Michigan State demolished the Wolverines in all four mee'ings last year between the two clubs. The Spartans are determined ro sink Michigan hopes for a bright sea- son with a continuation of their winning ways against their arch- rival. The Maize and Blue will be equally determined to re-establisn themselves as contenders in the WCHA. Tonight in Ann Arbor, to- morrow in East Lansing the story will be told. Billboard Basketball tickets go on sale November 19th and 20th at the Michigan Ticket Department, on the corner of State and Hoover.
