Michigan's water polo team
starts from scratch today as it
swims after the Midwest Water
Polo Conference championship
being held in Matt Mann Pool.
Michigan enters the tourna-
ment with a 10-1 dual meet re-
cord, good for the dual m e e t
crown, but the season record
means nothing as the top six
Midwest teams splash their way
through the round-robin tourn-
ey.
Theeventual victor must play
five games in two days, and fav-
orites may not even be around
for tomorrow's competition. As
Michigan coach John Pheney puts
it: "If one team gets hot, there's
not much you can do. We were
5-5 last year and came in se-
cond."
If Michigan is to add the con-
ference championship to the
dual meet championship it cap-
tured last week, - the polomen
must first get by Purdue and
Kentucky today.
"We think we can win it,"
Pheney stated. "The guys are
confident." Pheney claims Pur-
due will be weakened because
grad students cannot play in this
ourney
tournament, eliminating some of
Purdue's best players. The Wol-
verines will meet the Boilermak-
ers at 1 p.m.
Win or lose, Michigan must
take on the Wildcats from Ken-
tucky tonight at 9 p.m. "Ken-
tucky is going to be tough,"
Pheney asserted. "They real-
ly knocked Indiana and Loyola
off with ease. They just didn't
play well when they played us,
and we did."
Kentucky sports a 7-2 record
and the Wildcats wvill be trying
to avenge an earlier 11-6 loss to
Michigan.
Although the Kentucky-Michi-
gan game should be a barnburn-
er, Wolverine forward S t u a r t
Isaac says he thinks it will be
Loyola and Michigan in t h e
finals.
Loyola finished second to the
Wolverines in the dual meet race
with a 12-3 record, but the three
losses came in close games with
Michigan, Kentucky and Indiana.
Loyola coach Ralph Erickson
was visibly displeased with his
team's performance last weekend
and even Pheney concedes the
Ramblers should provide a tough
fight for the Wolverines.
Defending champion Indiana
is seeded a surprising fifth, on

begins
the b-sis of its 7-S dual meet re-
cord. The Indiana roster is fill-
ed with members of its NCAA
championship swim team.
With names like Fred Tyler,
Larry Barbiere, Pat O'Connor,
and Olympian John Murphy, In-
diana sounds invincible, but the
team has been plagued by var-
ious ailments, including a fued
with swimming coach James
"Doc" Counsilman:
For unknown reasons, Coun-
silman suddenly refused last
weekto let the water polo team
use the I.U. pool for practice.
Unable to practice, Indiana was
forced to withdraw from the dual
meet tournament last weekend,
thus forfeiting two games.
Sources hint that Counsilmap
was irritated by the team's poor
play against Michiganand Ken-
tucky two weeks before.
Indiana opens this weekend's
action with an 11 a.m. contest
against Illinois-Chicago Circle.
Michigan takes on Purdue in the
second game starting at 1 p.m.
and Indiana closes the after-
noon competition against Loy-
ola at three.
Purdue battles Kentucky in
the evening's first game at 5
p.m. Loyola and Chicago Cir-
cle splash around at 7 p.m. and
Michigan closes tonight's pro-
gram with the Kentucky game.
Tomorrow's competition will
be determined by today's results.
There will be games at 11 a.m.,
1 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and what will
probably the championship at
7:30 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased at
the door and are good for the
entire day. Admission price is 50
cents.
