A party official acknowledged that only 30 per cent of the revo- lutionary party members have been able to live up to the offic- ial sex guidelines. "ONE REASON they fail," said Angelo Arvati, 30-year-old edi- tor of the party publication, "is because of political differences between husbands and wives. In a manual presented by Sec- retary - General Aldo Brandirali, the party made sexual harmony one of its chief dictums. "Only in that way," Brandirali said; "can one be serene the day " after and begin a new day of struggle for the ultimate victory - edification of socialism." BESIDES ,SEXUAL. harmony, the party program had warned against sexual intercourse more than once a day, claiming: "All that about virility and making love more than once in one night is a bourgeois myth and reflects the theory that wo- men are sex objects." Brandirali, 32 and married, links sex and politics because "sex without class consciousness cannot give satisfaction even if it is repeated until infinity." THE PARTY has no represen- tation in the Italian Senate or Chamber of Deputies. However, it participates in elections. Its members are believed to num- ber a few thousand but there is no exact count.. The party's weekly publication is said to sell about 40,000 copies. Editor Arvati wrote: "For a Marxist - Leninist sex must be talked about in public and con- ducted along political lines." THE FIRST commandment of the party calls for marriage among comrades. Divorce, is ac- cepted so long as couples con- Ifgg Driving restrictions I mposed in Holland fess their difficulties to the par- ty and a decision is reached col- lectively by comrades. w On feminism, Arvati says, "If's a serpent beginning to creep into our organization. Gripped by false myths, many women were not working at home and were ignoring their children." The party's sex program drew criticism, even from some left- ist organizations. "BRANDIRALI'S p r a g r a m is a new morality invented only to reassure the leaders of his par- ty and to allow them to keep its members on the leash," said an- other extreme left organization, Lotta Continua. "Despicable," declared II Man- ifesto, the newspaper of another extreme left group. Ruud Lubbers, minister of eco- nomic affairs, said gasoline ra- tioning was not at present con- templated and would be consid- ered only if the oil supply situa- tion showed further serious de- terioration. But he said stand-by legisla- tion would be put through Par- liament within two weeks so that the government could introduce rationing and other restrictions on use of oil products where and when necessary. The minister announced at a press conference that a speed limit of 60 mph would be intro- duced on highways and motorists were being asked to drive slower on main roads. The government was asking the Dutch public to drive less and cycle more, make more use of public transport, to share cars to and from work, and reduce consumption of home-heating oil. Dutch industry's voluntary coop- eration to save fuel was also be-1 ing bought, the minister said, and it was necessary to econo- mize on gas and electricity. i ,I Ii WWI 's i r i i GRAD COFFEE OUR WEDNESDAY 8-10 P.M.
