Coach Bob Blackman's crew made up for it, though,'by crossing the Iowa goal line seven times. Freshman running back Jim Phillips' two touchdown runs, in- cluding a second - period 62- yard sprint, paced Illinois in the massacre. More importantly for the Illini was their strong defen- sive showing against the poten- tially explosive Hawkeyes. Illi- nois faces its moments of truth the next two Saturdays when they meet Ohio State and Michi- gan back-to-back.- Northwestern held Ohio State to a scoreless tie after one quar- ter before collapsing and allow- ed the Buckeye's to score 53 points in the second and third periods on route to a 60-0 rout. It was OSU's defense which provided the Bucks with the op- portunity to score so frequently. With no score early in the sec- ond quarter, Ohio State's Neal Colzie broke loose a punt return for 45 yards to set up the Scar-. let and Gray's first tally, a two- yard run by quarterback Cor- nelius Greene. Soon after Randy Gradishar Ohio's State's All-American line- backer, returned an intercepted Mitch Anderson aerial to the Northwestern 19. A few plays later sophomore tailback Archie Griffin raced in from the 18. The Buckeyes scored for the third time in the second quarter when Ken Fox fell on a blocked punt in the Northwestern end zone. In additional conference play Michigan State and Wisconsin garnered their first loop wins, beating Purdue and Indiana re- spectively. MSU quarterback Charlie Bag- gett led the disshevelled Spartans to a 10-7 win. The burly Baggett scrambled for 133 yards, includ- ing a 69 yard touchdown scam- per. The Spartans scored first after defensive back Bill Simp- son returned an interception 54 yards to the Purdue 12, leading to Dick Kryt's 23-yard field goal. Purdue answered with a drive engineered by senior quarterback Bo Bobrowski. The Boilermakers scored on fullback Pete Gross' two-yard blast. For the rest of the afternoon, the Spartan de- fense, blessed with strong field position and offense-hampering rain, contained Purdue in the sec- ond half, preserving the rare MSU victory. The Wisconsin Badgers, after withstanding a murderous early schedule, showed what they could do when given the chance against a mediocre team, whipping the Indiana Hoosiers 31-7. After an early Wisconsin field goal, Indi- ana back Sylvester Wilson fum- bled the ensuing kickoff and the Badgers recovered on the Indiana 16. Jeff Marek carrried on the next three carries and tallied on the third from five yards out. Indiana scored their only points when s'persoph Quinn Buckner intercepted a Gregg Bohlig pass and brought it back to the Wis- consin 41 yard line. Indiana drove in close to the goal on two strong r'is by Ken Starling, and Mike Glazier scored from the one shortly thereafter. Wiscon- sin added three more touchdowns to ice the gime, two of the scores by Marek. Next week's Big Ten action finds Ohio State at Illinois, Pur- due at Iowa, Wisconsin at Michi- gan State, Minnesota at North- western and Indiana here against the Wolverines.
