Although he finished with only a .253 average, he was the most overwhelming winner, re- ceiving 184 votes, far ahead of second-place finisher Thurman Munson of the New York Yankees. Munson got 57 votes. Perez provided the Reds with a solid one-two sock in the mid- dle of the batting order, smash- ing 27 homers, knocking in 101 runs and batting .314 - fourth highest in the National League. Bryant,the only NL hurler to reach the 20victory mark-he was 24-12-amassed 84 votes in topping 20-game winners Vida Blue and Ken Holtzman of Oak- land and Wilbur Wood of the Chi- cago White Sox as the best left- handed pitcher. His teammate, Speier, made the select squad despite a low .249 batting average. But he smacked 11 homers and knocked in 71 runs. Stargell, the NL pacesetter in home runs with 44 and in runs batted in with 119, finished sec- ond to Rose in the balloting for outfielders with 231 votes. Jack- son, the AL leader with 32 homers and 117 RBI, collected 200 votes. Evans, enjoying his finest sea- son in the majors, hitting .280 with 41 homers and 104 runs batted in, was an easy winner at third base, with 119 votes to 87 for second-place finisher Sal Bando of Oakland. Carew, capturing his third AL batting championship with a .350 average - best in the majors - garnered 136 votes for second base. Johnson was second with 107. Ryan, the Angels' flamethrow- ing right - hander surpassed Sandy Koufax' m a j o r league strikeout record by one, fanning 383 batters, and posted his first 20-victory season, winning 21. .
