RAMSEY AND BOSCO envi- sion their spectacles as emotion- al experiences for their audi- ences. Laugh at them or cry over them; a response is of the essence. According to these "braini- acs", as they like to call them- selves, the ideal Spectaclecan incorporate anything and every- thing. "Why limit people to something tangible in art?" Ramsey asks. "Why play it down as compared to Leonardo Da Vin- ci's Mona Lisa? Art is not some- thing that can be judged right or wrong." Spectacle, however, is more than just art and entertainment. Bosco and Ramsey have made it into a lifestyle. They raised the original capital by working for a brewing company, diddling with parsley extracts for beer. Then green men were sighted on eight major university campuses, in- everyone welcome 1. - I '. eluding the University of Michi- gan. IT WAS the start of the "Con- ceptual Activist" movement, in- stigated by Spectacle to spread their philosophies first to uni- versities, and ultimately across the entire nation. The first week of April this year was declared Spectacle Week, and troops of spacemen reappeared, hitting four cities in all. In Detroit, Martians handed out free toys on street corners, and atwenty foot book was found on the steps of the Detroit Pub- lic library. Extraterrestial be- ings invaded Toronto, Central Park and Chinatown. Spectacle plans a slew of fu- ture concerts centered around the concept of absurdity, and they eventually hope to complete- ly do away with music , and concentrate instead spectacles. Their ultimate hope is that peo- ple will no longer feel the need for specific entertainment, but will develop, as Ramsey puts it, "their individual potential for spontaneous creativity";, that they will entertain themselves. "SPECTACLE is positive in nature," Ramsey explains. "It has the potential to move peo- ple. But it needs motivation from the people. There lies its hope." Jo Marcotty is a Daily staff writer.
