Sunday, September 30, 1973 THE MICHIGAN DAILY 'Page Seven - Sunday, September 30, 1973 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven" Hank homers; ------- Cards in 2nd By The Associated Press Aaron: One More toG (o ATLANTA-Henry Aaron met the first delivery from Hous- ton's Jerry Reuss with solid wood and drove the ball over the left field fence for his career 713 home run. Aaron, with one game remaining in the baseball season, needs only one home run to tie Babe Ruth's record. Cubs, Mets swim CHICAGO-The doubleheader between the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs was rained out yesterday, prolonging the dizzy baseball race in the National League East. It marked the second straight rainout in the four-game series, which will be launched with a doubleheader beginning today at noon. The other two games were rescheduled for Monday, begin- ning at noon at Wrigley Field, which has no lights. The umpiring crew headed by Augie Donatelli waited for 2 hours before calling off the doubleheader. In fact, 11/2 hours after the first game was scheduled to begin, Donatelli announced there would be no chance of playing two games-but all efforts would be made to play at least one game. Cards fly, but how high? ST. LOUIS-Bob Gibson pitched six strong innings and re- ceived 17-hit support as the St. Louis Cardinals. battered Steve Carlton and the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 yesterday. The victory kept the Cardinals alive in the National League East, moving them 1 games behind first-place New York. The Cardinals have one game left and the Mets have four to play. The 37-year-old Gibson, making his first start since injuring his knee Aug. 4, limited the Phillies to five hits, helping the Cardinals win their fourth straight game. Bucs plummet PITTSBURGH-Ken Singleton keyed a five-run Montreal explosion with a two-run single in the second inning and the Expos went on to defeat Pittsburgh 6-4 yesterday in a rain- delayed nationally televised baseball game, dealing a near fatal blow to the Pirates' National League East title hopes, dropping the Pirates into third.. The Pirates have just two games remaining and any com- bination of two New York victories or Pirate losses will eliminate Pittsburgh from the race. New York has four remaining games. YOGI BERRA, HIS job saved by the first-place Mets' recent surge, will go to any length to find talent to push his team over the top in the final days of the National League East pennant race. Here, he discuss- es some hot new prospects with Wrigley Field head grounds- keeper Roy Bergen, who had plenty of time to chat as rain halted the Mets-Cubs series for the second consecutive day. The Mets and Cubs still have four games left, and the way things are going we might make it to the World Series sometime around Halloween. Are you still reading ewyparents read? In the first grade, when you were taught to read "Run Spot Run," you had to read it out loud. Word-by-word. Later, in the second grade, you were asked to read silently. But you couldn't do it. You stopped reading out loud, but you continued to say every word to yourself. Chances are, you're doing it right now. This means that you read only as fast as you talk. About 250 to 300 words per minute. (Guiness' Book of World Records lists John F. Kennedy as delivering the fast- est speech on record: 327 words per minute.) The Evelyn Wood Course teaches you to read without mentally saying each word to yourself. Instead of reading one word at a time, you'll learn to read groups of words. To see how natural this is, look at the dot over the line in bold type. grass is green You immediately see all three words. Now look at the dot between the next two lines of type. week and finish each page in 31 seconds. At 3,000 words per minute, you'll be able to read the 447 page novel The God. father in 1 hour and 4pminutes. These are documented statistics based on the results of the 450,000 people who have enrolled in the Evelyn Wood course since its inception in 1959. The course isn't complicated. There are no machines. There are no notes to take. And you don't have to memorize any- thing. 95% of our graduates have improved their reading ability by an average of 4.7 times. On rare occasions,a graduate's read- ing ability isn't improved by at least 3 times. In these instances, the tuition is completely refunded. Take a free ' Mini-Lesson on Evelyn Wood. N.L.
