Bearing that in mind, we will continue with an objective view of Navy's chances of accomplish- ing that monumental feat. Navy opened the 1973 campaign on a rugged note, as they faced a powerhouse ball-club f r o m VMI, who some observers said could go all the way. The Mid- shipmen responded to the chal- lenge as they crushed their op- ponent, 37-8. In fact, the fired up Sailors made their opponents seasick. They held VMI to a paltry 191 yards total offense; intercepted six passes and forced two fum- bles. The vaunted Navy offense ran for 330 yards and passed for 123 more. Also on the offen- sive ledger, John Stufflebeem booted three field goals and all four extra-point attempts. After disposing of VMI with such ease, it looked as if the Middies might be on the way to capturing the glory and fame that was theirs in the "Staubach- era" about a decade ago, but Joe Paterno had other ideas. Perhaps it was overconfidence, or perhaps it was just luck, but somehow the Nittany Lions of Penn State slipped by the Mid- dies 39-0 last Saturday, in what might be the black' mark on an otherwise exciting season. LATER, AFTER the debacle, Navy coach George Welsh, a for- mer Penn State assistant, was asked what happened. He replied philosophically: "Penn State just kept the ball." Indeed they did, the Lions had 83 offensive plays compared with Navy's 43. The Middies were held to a total of 154 hard - fought y rds, while yielding 477 'to Penn. State. To add insult to injury, Cleve- land Cooper saw his streak of seven straight 100-plus yards per game broken with a 52 yard out- put. But Navy's spirits were some- what buoyed when they saw who HARRY'S SURPLUS 1166 Broadway (north of Broadway bridge) 769-9247 open' mon-fri: 10-7 sat: 9-6 FIELD JACKETS ... $10.98 UP FIELD JACKET LINERS .......4.50 UP DOWN FILLED STUFF JACKETS 19.98 LEATHER FLIGHT JACKETS .......67.98 y oung9 l-sports NIGHT EDITOR: MARC FELDMAN was next on their schedule. After all, the Wolverines of Michigan are only ranked fourth in the nation. Navy's major fear at this point is that they may be guilty of looking ahead to such import- ant clashes as the ones with Bos- ton College and Syracuse. Hope- fully the Middies will be mental- ly "up" for Michigan. NAVY'S strong point on defense may be their experience. In fact, they've got two returning start- ers. They are linebacker Charley Miletich, the team captain, and safety Charlie Robinson. Also expected to be strong points of the Navy defense are linebackers Dan Driscoll and David Higgin- crew botham, end Tim Harden and tackle Darius Karalis. Asked what he expected from Michigan, defensive coach Rick Lantz commented; "When you're playing them you've got to ex- pect the running game to be fore- most. But we anticipate Frank- lin will be throwing more often, and we've been working like hell on our pass defense. Our defense is somewhat similar to Michi- gan's in that we go basically with a 5-2 set-up, although we send our linebackers through a lithe more because our line isn't as strong." Navy's offense is somewhat more experienced than the de- fense, as they return eight start- ers, led by halfback Cooper. Al- though the Midshipmen were on- ly 4-7 last year, their offense ac- counted for these team records: total yards (3,894), total plays (823), rushing plays (537), and total first downs (218) It should be a tight battle to- morrow. In fact, Michigan may wish they could rearrange the schedule so they could have Ohio State as a tune-up for Navy. Wed.'- Fri. Sat. - Sun. *. 1 lp.m.- 8 pm. * .m. -8 P..
