Thursday, September 20, 1973 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven MATCH TONIGHT: Billie Jean isolated, while Riggs talks on Ex-diplomat claims Allende was killed I (Continued from Page 1) GIVEN A CLEAN bill of health Sunday by her personal physician' after bouts with a virus and a sugar imbalance in her blood, the five-time Wimbledon and three-I time U. S. champion pronounced herself feeling "great" on her ar- rival here Monday-then retreatedj into a virtual, shell. Oddsmakers continued to quote Riggs a strong favorite, with the betting line ranging from 5-2 to 8-5. The vast majority of tennis "experts" - sports writers, veter- an players and others close to the game - picked Riggs to win, most of them in three sets. MAN1Y OBSERVERS -and^Riggs - speculated that the usually gregarious King was feel- ing the pressure of the incredible buildup surrounding the match, which has developed into one oft the most spectacular sports events ever.$ What is certain to be the largest crowd ever to watch a tennisI match-an anticipated 30,000, pay- ing from $6 to $100 for seats - willI view the match, along with a na- tionwide television audience plus viewers in 40 other countries that may surpass 25 million. Few expect the match to go five sets. If it does, however, most agree that King's chances would be enhanced since she is 26 years younger than Riggs, who won his first of two U. S. titles and the Wimbledon championship in 1939 -five years before King was born. KING'S COACH, Dennis Van Der Meer, who will be at courtside, ex-! pressed the opinion of most ex- perts when he said King can beat Riggs only by over-powering him. "She can't out-steady him; she's1 got to go to the net," said Van Der Meer, who coached Margaret Court when she was trounced by Riggs 6-1, in the first "Battle of the Sexes" last May 13. Investors MEXICO CITY (A)-The former Chilean ambassador to Mexico said last night that the late Chile- an President Salvador Allende did not commit suicide but died of wounds while fighting against soldiers attacking the presiden- tial palace in Santiago. The former ambassador, Hugo Vigorena, said that a person who stayed with Allende "until, the very end" told of the Marxist president dying in a fight to the, finish. The military junta that over- threw Allende's government Sept. 11 announced that he had com- mitted suicide with a subma- chine gun given him by Cuban Premier Fidel Castro. Afterwards Allende's w i d o w Join The Da Phone 7 said in a telephone interview with a Mexican television sta- tion that she believed the junta's version. But Vigorena, in whose house Mrs. Allende is now staying, said she had taken that position "be- cause she only had heard the junta's version and had nothing else to go on." He did not elabo- rate on Mrs. Allende's current view. He maintained that the person who saw Allende die said he had "four bullets in the chest, two in the neck and several in the head." The suicide story told only of two shots in the chin. Vigorena refused to identify his source "because of security rea- sons." 3ily Ad Staff 6b4-0558 SKIP DINNER and PLAY POOL FREE at THE MICHIGAN UNION TODAY 5:00-7:00 P.M. The Marxist president later re- fused to pay compensation to the companies, charging that they had for years been taking excessive profits out of the country. Officials yesterday did not indi- cate whether the military govern- ment was planning to pay the com- pensation. But the new government has al- ready indicated it is ready to start repaying Chile's national debt, on which Dr. Allende had ceased pay- mnents pending long and complex talks with creditor nations to re- negotiate it.
