VOTE THIS WEEKEND

UAW
DETROIT (A) - The United
Alito Workers yesterday began to
sell 117,000 Chrysler production
workers a new contract with key
fringe benefit improvements and
a first step in the area of volun-
tary overtime.
Chrysler plants across the
country and in Canada remained
shut as UAW leaders met with
committeemen, officers and shop
stewards from all Chrysler lo-
cals to explain the new three-
year contract.
LOCAL RATIFICATION votes
are scheduled for Friday, Satur-
day and Sunday. Chrysler cannot
resume production until th'ey are
completed.
Most of the shop stewards who
attended yesterday's union meet-
ing predicted ratification, al-
though some said they were up-
set that UAW President Leonard
Woodcock said individual locals
could not strike over local issues
without headquarters' approval.
Of the 69 Chrysler plants in-
volved in the strike, only 13 have
settled contracts on local issues.
"I THINK we came out real
well, especially on retirement

offers
benefits and - voluntary over-
time," said Julie Maddox, 45,
one of the shop stewards at
Tuesday's meeting.
"In three years I'm going to
retire, 48 years old, with full
benefits," Maddox said. "I'd say
it's a good package."
Major revisions in the contract
provide for full retirement after
30 years service and a limitation
on management's right to assign
overtime. Under it, a worker can-
not be told to work more than
nine hours a day, six days a
week. In addition, each worker
must be given every third Sat-
urdav off if he asks for it.
OTHER PROVISIONS of the
package include a three per cent
wage increase in each of the
three years, with an additional
12 cents per hour in the first
year; a revised cost of living
formula that will boost the pay-
ment 17 per cent; a company-
paid dental plan beginning in
the second year, and a longer
uninterrupted holiday during the
Christmas-New Year season.

break-through and said they will
not ask for any better package
from Ford or General Moto's.
Traditionally, the union has
tried to win a slightly better
agreement from the remaining
two members of the Big Three
U.S. auto makers after winning
its pattern agreement.
"WE DON'T PURSUE that kind
of policy," Woodcock said when
asked whether he would seek a
better agreement at Ford,
which sources said is next on the
union's list.
Of the Chrysler package, he

said, "I think in industrial un-
ion terms it is most certainly a
break - through and precedent
setting."
The union struck Chrysler at
midnight Friday to back up its
contract demands. The settle-
ment was announced 63 hours la-
ter.
CHRYSLER announced yester-
day it is raising car and truck
prices an average of $72.80 to
cover the increased costs of la-
bor and materials, but said the
hike does not reflect-the cost of
the new contract.
