In one of the simpler state- ments of the evening, a young man said: "I wholeheartedly resent the fact that some people think they have the right to tell me what to think, see, hear, and do." JOHN BARNES, who identified himself as a "disciple of our Lord" made explicit the assumptions of many waiting outside the chamber when he said: "Anyone who votes against the ordinance is against humanity and the Lord." Most speakers in favor of the or- dinance, however cited more secu- lar considerations to support their position. A young woman, who said she teaches home economics at a Faith , ii if I Way Baptist High School, saw por- nography at a bus station and said she was offended because the books there were exploiting wo- men's bodies and 'infringing on her rights and those of other people. OTHER SPEAKERS in favor of the ordinance pointed to the harm- ful effects they said pornography had on children and young people. One businessman said stores and theatres dealing in hard pornog- raphy would ruin business in down- town Ypsilanti. Similar anti-abscenity ordinances are being considered in some of the townships surrounding Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor.
