Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY Saturday, September 15, 1973 Saturday, Septermber 15, 1973 -r THE MICHIGAN DAILY U m BAGGETT KEY MAN Stolz, Sparty talk By BOB McGINN It's been seven trying autumns since the Michigan State football faithfuls have had a ballclub worth remembering, and the general feeling in EastaLansing is that enough is enough. During that period, when the Spartans could do no better than win 27 times against 34 defeats, State followers just never could forget the glory days of 1965-66. It was unbelievably fun to scream "Kill, Bubba, Kill." And who could ever forget,. the 10-10 deadlock with Notre Dame, when Ara Parseghian ran out the clock and into a storm of con- troversy. And while, the post-national championship Spartans always were respectable, the State back- ers could never accept them. Sooner or later the master- mind of all those victories over 19 years, Hugh D. Daugherty, had to go. It happened last fall, and Duffy was replaced by one of his unknown assistants, de- fensive ca2h Dennv Stolz. MSU had 10 players selected in the National Foatball League draft, three of them first round choices. So it would have been easy for Stolz to come on easy with the "it'll take time" roun- tine. But that, like his predecessor, isn't Denny Stolz's Way of doing things. "My one ambition is to bring Michigan State back to national MICHIGAN STATE (5-5-1, 5-2-1) Michigan Opponent No. 5 Starters back-Offense 5 Defense S Series: Michigan, 40-20-5 prominence,' 'he says. "And I don't mean over a period of years, I mean in 1973." Those are pretty strong words from any first year coach, es- pecially one who has only nine returning regulars and but 30 lettermen. But the more Spartaai followers hear Stolz speak, the more conTidence the man g.n- erates. The first thing Stolz did when he was named head man. as ne remembers, was to introduce himself to the press. And the second thing the quick-tongued mentor did was junk the 111- fated Wishbone offense which Daugherty had utilized since 1971. That opened the door for North Carolina transfer Charlie Bag- gett (6-1, 190), a rifle-armed, passer and an adept scrambler, to take ocntrol of Stolz's I for- mation attack. If spring practice means anything, Baggett could be a good one. The Green Meanies were me- diocre at best in the aerial game last fall, completing just 44 toss- es all season. Baggett, and his impressive backup,- Tyrone Wil- lingham (5-8, 155), should change that. Whether they can complete passes from the seat of their pants is the most critical prob- lem Stolz may eventually have to face. The entire Spartan offensive line, with the exception of split end Mike Jones, has departed, leaving a bevy of behemoths Stolz suspiciously terms "long on potential and short on ex- perience." Several tough running backs return to complete the rosy acx- field picture. The foremost returnee is jun- ior talback David E. Brown, who came on in mid-season to lead the club in rushing with 575 yards. He'll be joined in the I by holdover fullbacks Clarence Bul- lock (5-9, 198) and Arnold Mor- gado (5-11, 198). Stolz's crew should be their typically roughhouse selves again on defense, even though Xli- American safety Brad Van Pelt, linebacker Gail Clark, and tackle Gary Van Elst have departed. MSU likes to talk about their defensive backfield as the "best in the ocnference," and they have more than just wind in their sails. The foursome is experi- enced and talented. Senior Bill Simpson (6-1, 178), the recipient of this,. year's big push for All-America honors from his school's overactive PR de- partment, returns at vide safety after his great junior season, while hard-hitting Bruce Hayner (who crow is fi stafet La back neer( upse to hi and celle S-15 22 29 O- 6 13 20 S27 N- 3 10 17 24 LEATHER, SUEDE COATS, & I from Sprain, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Arg owide selection of TURTLENECKS, PRINT SH to compliment your wardrobe david ].
