"There are three purposes to this conference," explained Dorothy McGuigan, conference coordinator. "They are to provide a showcase for excellent research done here at the University, to bring together scholars from the University and the surrounding area with common interests to exchange their views and to en- courage funding of first-class projects dealing with women." MORE THAN 50 University scholars will present recent re- search in 15 interdisciplinary areas such as the Psychology of Women, Women in History and Male Roles and the Male Experi- >tence. Last year's conference, attended by more than 100 people, proved the study of women to be more than just a passing fad Because of the growing acceptance of research on women, CCEW has been able to expand the scope of the conference to include discussion on new perspectives concerning male and fe ><; >: male sex roles. ^ 0ht "A few years ago, it was a dubious area to research-why women?" stated McGuigan. "It's much more widely accepted hrough a now." THE BARS - a traditional Irish pursuit - scarcely noticed the existence of the holiday, al- though The Village Bell sold green beer while Dooley's Bar, an Irish named-pub, served it only on request, almost as an afterthought. The Golden Falcon, however, featured a St. Patrick's Day special with music by "Rakish Paddy," a group straight from Belfast, Ireland. An occasional Michigan Bell telephone operator greeted cus- tomers with "Happy St. Pat- ricks Day, may I help you?" All in all, things were pretty quiet yesterday, maybe 't's the recession. Let's hope It's not the luck of the Irish. The conference is free and open to the, public. Presentation' from it will be published in book form later this year.
