Bobby Knight's crew has not been tested since leading scorer Scott May broke his arm, and will find out where it stands tomor- row, when it battles Texas El- Paso. The Miners won the national championship in 1966 upsetting the nation's top-rated team en- route. This year's unit features a towering front line led by Ed Lynum, but it won't be enough to stop Indiana. After bumping UTEP, the Hoosiers will dispose of PAC-8 runnerup Oregon State, who will have earned the dub- ious previlege of playing Indi- ana by thrashing Middle Ten- nessee. OSU's Beavers have ex- ceptional height and 6-8 soph AP Photo INDIANA'S Bob Wilkerson (20) tries to keep a tight grip on the basketball while Iowa's Scott Thompson applies some pressure. With the NCAA title up for grabs, the number one-ranked Hoosiers will be seeking to get a grip on that too as will 31 other teams when tournament play gets underway tomorrow. LUNCH PROVIDED Tuscaloosa, where Kentucky and Marquette tangle. Defend- ing Mideast champ Marquette has met with success in the past in Tuscaloosa and hopes the trend will continue. The War- riors are weak in the pivot, and this will be the cause of their downfall to the talent rich Wild-' cats. KENTUCKY, with second- team All-American Kevin Gre- vey, should have no trouble' beating the winner of the Cen- tral M i c h i g a n- Georgetown game. The semi-final duel would set up a Kentucky-Indiana regional final. The two teams met early in the season in Bloomington, and Indiana romped. This game will be a lot closer, and has distinct upset possibilities, but count on the Hoosiers, here For once, the Midwest region- al is strong, three of the eight teams rank among the top dozen ThiS N OOM)R $2.50 85@ FRI. - SAT. OHRLIN GLENN i in the nation. ACC powerhouse Maryland wil bounce the Creigh- ton Bluejays in the opening round and stop a fine Cincinnati team in one semi-final. The Bearcats will have breezed by Texas A&M to get ther. TOMORROW third - ranked Louisville battles - a Rutgers team that showcases one of the top tandems in the nation, Phil Sellers and Mike Dabney. Over- all team talent will supply the Cardinals with the win. Notre Dame lost a great deal from last year's team with the de- parture of John Shumate and Gary Brokaw. This year's for- tunes rest solely on the broad shoulders of All-American Ad- rian Dantley. The six-6 sopho- more may be strong enough to carry the Irish past Kansas to- morrow, but not even the com- ing of St. Patrick's Day will keep Louisville from taking the load off Dantley's back. The Louisville - Maryland matchup will make a helluva regional final, but the Terrapins' out- standing trio of guards, John Lucas, Mo Howard and Brad Davis will make the Cardinals see red. MICHIGAN needs an outstand- ing effort on the boards to be able to beat second-ranked UCLA. Faced with a similar predicament in last year's tour- ney, the Wolverines rose to the occasion against then third- ranked Notre Dame. Even with the absence of Michael Campa- nella Russell the Maize and Blue might pull off an upset again. Outstanding perform- ances from everyone and a few lucky bounces are requisite though. The Bruins are not in- vincible this year, however, they must be tabbed as favorites tomorrow night. Utah State's tournament trail will dead end, but not until it bops Big Sky champion Mon- tana. Arizona State faces Ala- bama at home in Tempe, and that plus superstar Lionel Hol- lins will carry the Wildcats past the towering TiAle. Pacific Coast Athletic Asso- ciation runner-up San Diego State takes on Nevada-Las Vegas, andthe Aztecs owe thanks to Las Vegas coach Jerry Tarkanian for their berth in the tournament. PCAA cham- pion Long Beach St. is on pro- bation for NCAA rule violations incurred from when Tarkanian coached the 49ers, thus barring them from post-season play and enabling the Aztecs to replace them. Tarkanian's generosity towards San Diego St. ends there as Nevada-Las Vegas', "Fabulous Five" will beat the Aztecs. Arizona State should beat Tarkanian's Rebels in the semi-finals, but UCLA has a monopoly on the regional cham- pionship. it a CO PLAI ?
