The regular hockey season is
rapidly drawing to a close for
the Michigan Wolverines. With
only four games remaining,
they have clinched at least a
sixth place finish in the WCHAI
standings, ne ed i ng a minor~
miracle to climb into fourth or
fifth place.
This weekend's foe is the
Denver Pioneers. Denver, hav-
ing its worst season in someI
time, finds itself in ninth place
with the strong possibility ofI
missing the WCHA playoffs for
the -first time since Murray

Armstrong took the helm in
1956.
In his 19 years as coach,
Armstrong has won the con-,
ference title seven times and
the NCAA championships five
times. Last year. Armstrong's
team finished third in the
conference, one point from
second.
"For Michigan," commented
coach Dan Farrell, "it's a mat-
ter of getting things together for ,
the playoffs. But it's a key
series for Denver as they've
never been out of the pl. iyoff
race."
The big difference between
the Denver powerhouses of old
and their present team is goal-
tending. Their n u m b e r one
goalie from last year turned
pro, to the surprise of Arm- +
strong.
"Yes, I was caught by sur-1
prise. I didn't think he'd go. We
sorta came up shorthanded,"I
said the Denver mentor.
Denver was forced to re-
cruit a goalie after the good
ones committed themselves to
other schools. The Pioneers
thus came up with Ernie Glan-I
ville. After playing 13 g'mes,
however, he was lost for the1
season due to a disc injure. I

One strength that Denver
does seem to have is its first'
line.. Though none rank among
the league's top ten scorers,
center Mark Falcone and wing-
ers Chad Campbell and Jinn
Miller test the Michigan de-
fense, who have been playing
well of late.;
"That first line is prettyj
strong," remarked Farrell. "Its 1
exceptionally good."
"That's a bo ut the o nl1y
strength we have," commented
Armstrong. "All the rest of the:
players are very average."
