"I even used to race people on bikes for money, like $10, I never lost." IN HIS FIRST year of college William went to Muskegon Com- munity College and then came to Michigan after one semester. Through a technicality Dave lost a year of eligibility. NO, DAVE Williamns is special, because of what he gives to his team besides points .in a dual meet and outstanding times. One of his teammates stated frankly, "He's our- main man,: when he is doing good we all are good, that doesn't mean we do bad when he is not there, it's just that he adds a lot to us totally." Dave Williams runs the 300, 600, 440, 600, and 1000 at various to acquire all these qualities, outstanding runner and team leader? This tells you why Dave Wil- liams is special. He talks about the team more than himself. There was one point when Wil- liams despaired and it was probably justified. It was when sipdeven after having an out- standing year. "I was hurt, and deeply hurt when I didn't get a scholarship, so much so that I hated Michi- gan. Jack Harvey interceeded for me but finally I didn't need it anymore." WILLIAMS' philosophiy of run- ning has matured to the point where he says he won't die if he loses a race. "Never work harder than you have to against yourself, if you worry about who you're running against; you'll psyche yourself and fail. Run against yourself and, be confident in your own ability, that's all you can do." It has to be a breath of fresh air in an age of the spoiled athlete to have a Dave Wil- liams. Williams wvent on to win this race and two others as the Wolverines topped the Spartans, 81-SO. Williams runs a variety of events, but his most valuable asset to the Michigan track team is leadership. I "We've been working all year for this meet," Coach Stu Isaac said, "and the team is looking really good. They're putting in their best perform- ance of the season during prac- tice." Most of the women have "peaked" in preparation for the Big Tens. However, star swimmers Debby Brevitz and Kathy Knox will not peak until the NCAA Champion- ships in March where they hope to finish in the top six. Isaac still expects excellent performances out of Knox and Brevitz. Knox will be swim- ming the 50, 100, 200 and 400- yard freestyle races, while Brevitz is expected to place beaststroke and thed 100 and 200-yard individual medley. "With Kathy and Debby, we have two of the strongest swim- mers in the conference", Isaac enthused, "and if you combine their talents with good sprint- ers like Connie Ortega and Anne Allison, we should place second." The Michigan State Spartans, a strong team with a lot of depth, are highly favored for the number one position. Much of Michigan's hones rest on divers Brenda Truitt and Sue Gottlieb, who have turned in excellent perform- ances in the three dual swim meets of the season. However, Isaac cautioned "For the last three years at Big Tens, the home team has worn the diving, so we just can't tel how our divers will come out." "The team is really excited for this meet", captain Kathy Knox said. "I really think we're going to do well. We've been b'uilding'for this all year."
