'UT1TURNS Soybean suicide Depressed because your green thumb has turned pale? Re- lax. Your plants could be killing themselves without any help from you.-- Some plants have suidical impulses that no amount of lov- ing, care will remove, according to Dr. L. Nooden, Associate== Botany Prof. Suicidal plants are widespread among some annuals and crop plants. Near the end of the growing season, the plant flowers and develops seeds. The seed produces a death signal ;f and kills the plant before natural forces like weather can causeI death.If". Nooden and Sue Schreyer, a graduate student in Botany are working to identify and block the death signal. If this impulse could be stopped, the crop yields of plants like soybeans 'could- be increased by longer growing periods, Nooden said. He and Schreyer are studying soybean suicides through a grant-from the U. S. Department of Agrictulture. This self-destructiveness is not a conscious decision of the plant to die, Nooden. So punish yourself no longer for driving your plant to it's doom. Some plants are just programmed to self-destruct. -NORA DEANS Tattle tape AP Photo Students who have been hauled in for inspection after the CHICAGO MAYOR RICHARD Daley dons a sombrero yester- electronic book checking system in the undergrad library has day to meet one of his Spanish-speaking supporters.
