By BILL HEENAN 7
It is not often that elementary
school children can instruct
their teachers, but at the Clon-
lara Free school, the students
do just that.
However, their teacher is not
a matronly lady who can be
paciifed with apples. Rather,
she is a Hazleton 2000 computer
used to supplement regular in-
struction.
WHILE COLLEGE students
curse their computerized drop-
and-add system, the students
at Clonlara have complete con-
trol over their electronic tu-
tors. They only have to pull the
plug and resume the traditional
learning method.
"The kids derive a great deal
of satisfaction because of their
power to control the machine,"
said Pat Mountgomery, the free
school's director. "The child's
fear of failure in front of his
classmates is absent here, and
an enormous obstacle to learn-
ing is removed."

"It's fun," said ten-year old blank questions. aLter, the hu-

that the government is prepared
to expand its public service
jobs program if unemployment
mounts.
The present $500 million pro-
gram will be doubled to $1 bil-
lion to create another 100,000
jobs is unemployment reaches
5.5 per cent, Brennan said.
In its report, the Labor De-
partment said 4.9 million Amer-
icans were unable to find jobs
last month, an increase of about
19,000 since July. Total employ-
ment stood at 86.2 million, prac-
tically unchanged for the past

two months and up only 375,000
since January.
The rise in joblessness last
month was reflected primarily
in the unemployment rate of
adult men, which rose from
3.5 to 3.8 per cent. The rate for
young men aged 20 to 24 jumped
from 8.1 to 9.3 per cent, while
the rate of men 55 and over
moved up from 2.9 to 3.2 per,
cent.
Offsetting the unemployment
rise among adult men was a
slight decline among teen-agers,
whose jobless rate declined
from 16.2 to 15.3 per cent.
