Sale 90 Minute 8-Track By MICHAEL WILSON Michigan's gymnastics squad enters its first team competi- tion of the season this weekend as they travel to Chicago for the annual Windy City Invita- tional Tournament. This year's classic features eighteen teams, including most of the Big Ten schools. Coming off a respectable showing in the Midwest Invi- tational last weekend, the Wol- verine tumblers hope to get an overall evaluation of the team. LINEUPS FOR the tourney are essentially the same as they were for last week's tourna- ment, the only change being Richard Bigras competing in the all-around competition instead of Bob Darden. Besides Bigras, co-captain Bruce Keeshin and freshman Harley Danner make up the list of all-arounders for this week- end's tournament. The floor exercise features Chuck Stillerman, while sopho- more Chuck Ventura and jun- ior Jerry Poynton compete on the pommel horse. Poynton turn- ed in an excellent performance in the Midwest tourney, nlacing second out of 160 competitors. Rounding out the rest of the squad are Joe Neuenswander, Kurt Golder. and Scott Ponto on the rings; Bob Creek and Bod Darden on the high bar; and Darden again competing in vaulting and on the parallel bars. THE WOLVERINES are still hampered with injuries, as evi- denced by all-around competi- tor Jean Gagnon's shoulder ten- donitis and floor exercise spec- ialist Randy Sakamoto's ankle problem. "Sakamoto and Gagnon a r e still questionable," coach Newt Loken said, however he mdi- cated that Gagnon and Saka- moto should be ready by Jan- uary. The Windy City Invitational' is the second pre-season meet for the Wolverines this year, as the gymnastics squad doesn't enter conference competition un- til January. NEVERTHELESS, this week- end's competition is valued by the Wolverine mentor. "We want a nice presentation (ff a Michigan squad," Loken said. "It's mainly the competition thing where we just want to do well." Also, the tournament gives Loken the chance to evaluate other teams. The defending Big Ten champ, the Iowa Hawk- eyes, will be in Chicago this weekend and Loken looks for- ward to seeing the Hawkeye tumblers in action. Another interesting sidelight is that the Wolverines will get their first opportunity to ex- perience the effects of a new rule. This year, the score:, of four competitors in each event will count toward the eam score, and the Windy City classic enables Michigan to get an idea of how the rule can help, or hurt them. Stager is leaving some vet- eran swimmers home this week- end in order to get a good look at the freshmen he hopes will fill some of the holes in the Michigan lineup. Whit Davis and Clark Kogen will be going in the breaststroke with Davis also going in the individual medley. Brian Wylie and John Daly will be tested in the freestyle events and Dick Brown will be going in the butterfly. Stager sees the medley relay as the key to the Illinois meet, stressing that "we've got our strongest men entered in it (Helt, Pat Bauer, Yawger, Mark Anderson, Szuba, Davis, Daly, and Wylie) and it is early in the meet, so they all should be fresh." mm - II I ASHERS & DRYERS NO WAITING!
