Wednesday, November 20, 1974 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Pagae Five W edn sda , N ve m b r 2 , 1 74 H E M C HI A N AIL . V-- I V , 0 I Carlos Montoya: Flamenco master By STEVE ROSS Carlos Montoya, the father of modern Flamenco guitar, returned here triumphantly last night in a recital sponsored by the University Musical .Society, at Power Center. Time has not diminished Montoya's ability, although it may have affected the aging musician's stamina. His fingers flew over the strings as he masterfully strummed every note. The artist and his instrument appeared to be one. Montoya started out quickly dazzling the audience with his guitar work. The audience was struck with the freshness of the Flamenco guitar. Montoya played mandolin-like trills on two pieces, Algerias and Tarantas. After the first intermission Montoya played Cancion Del Norte, a mixture of Celtic and Galiciatic melodies which was supposed to remind the listener of bagpipes. The Flamenco music evoked bullfights more easily than bagppies. Montoya's variations after the second intermission made it interesting. He substituted Allegro Rosa for the third piece, Jota. In the most well executed piece of the evening, Saeta, Mon- toya made his guitar sound like a snare drum, creating a parade atmosphere. Montoya gave a masterful performance. By becoming one with his guitar, he was able to convey emotions which the audience could easily comprehend. They responded by giving him two standing ovations. SM opera opens with children's classic The music school will open its 1974-75 opera season at Lydia Mendelssohn Theater Thursday night with Engelbert Humper- dinck's classic "Hansel and Gretel." The production, which has been called "the Peter Panhof grand opera" is based on the familiar Grimms' fairy tale of the wicked witch in the ginger- bread house who has a sweet tooth for small children. Curtain time for "Hansel" is 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and 2 p.m. Sun- day. Tickets are $3.50 each (sea- son passes go for $9) and can be obtained at the Mendelssohn box office between 12:30 and 9 p.m. today and from 12:30 and 8 p.m. Thursday through Sun- day. i food clam sauce hotdog-bean casserole 1 can minced clams (can be A semi-elegant ,ariation on found near the tuna fish in that old time favorite franks and most stores) beans. 1 stick butter Diced onion Diced celery Dried parsley, Oregano Pepper Garlic salt 1 bay leaf Spaghetti or other type of macaroni. I find this especially good on sea shell macaroni. While macaroni is cooking, melt the butter. Drain most of the liquid from the can of clams and add to butter. Add celery and onion, and dashes and pinches of spices. Add bay leaf and simmer over a low light un- til noodles are done. Remove bay leaf andserve sauce over macaroni. 4 hotdogs 1-16 oz. can of baked beans Diced onion Bacon (if you can afford it) 1 tablespoon catsup 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon horseradish Brown onion in butter. If your food budget includes bacon, try a couple of strips. Place beans in casserole dish. Slice t h r e e hotdogs and add to beans. Crumble bacon into bits and add that and onions to beans and franks. Mix in catsup, brown sugar and horseradish for a lit- tle extra zip. Cut forth dog in half, then slice each half length- wise. Garnish top of the dish with long slices. Cook in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes to one hour. Serves 2-3.
