Phillips, Greene. who has gained over 600 yards THE MICHIGAN defense By ANDY GLAZER 'FJT IS TUESDAY, November 5. The Michigan Wolverine icers are having their daiy 3:30-5:30 practice. They skate through their one-on-one drills, smiling and patting one another on the back with the comraderie of a close knit, capable team. This is the same Michigan hockey team that has lost All- American goaltender Robbie Moore for six weeks due to a severe knee injury that required surgery. This is the same Michigan hockey team that beat Wisconsin 8-1 last Saturday night. Freshman Frank Zimmerman was in the nets. The obvious questions are: 1) How did the Wolverines come back so strongly after being routed the night before? and 2) Will they keep on winning without their standout goaltender of a year ago? The answers aren't so obvious. Zimmerman can perform "If this had happened last year it would have been different," said Don Farig, "we would have been in a lot of trouble. But Frank (Zimmerman) proved that he can play. We didn't know what he could do until the Wisconsin series. He did a hell of a job." So Zimmerman has proven he can do the job. Right, Angie Moretto? "It's a big loss, but we still have a competent goalie," said the talented center, "in some games it could make a difference, but Frank will give us solid play." Coach Dan Farrell is even more optimistic. "He's done very well. You know, last year the guys always knew that if they didn't play a great game they still had a great goaltender to bail them out. Initially there was some concern about- that, but Frank showed us all he can stop the puck." Blue won't change style When asked if there were going to be any changes in the way the Wolverines would approach games with Zimmerman in the nets, Farrell said, "No, we don't adopt our style of play to our goaltender. Robbie is a little quicker, andrtends to roam a little more. Frank is more of a 'classic' style goalie. But that won't change anything." And then there'sthe center of all the attention, Zimmerman himself. "I was a little scared at first. It must have been kind of obvious-Coach told me to stop shaking and stop the puck." Zimmerman stopped to smile. "I'd been really tight, but the guys encouraged me, and the defense played really well." Once the Blue saw that their new netminder could play top-calibre goal, they stopped worrying and gave Wisconsin a shellacking. And they appear to be ready to do more of the same until Moore gets back. Don't give up on Moore Make no mistake, Robbie will be back. "I had surgery just like this for my right knee three years ago, and I was playing again in two months. This left one had locked before, but this time it just didn't pop back like it usually does. "The doctor even had Jeff Perlinger and another player pulling on my leg from either side. When that didn't work, he tried traction from Thursday to Sunday. Finally he decided he had to operate. The knee will be fine-what I'm worried most about is about catching up in my schoolwork." Last year Coach Farrell said that "this is the only league you can get hot for five or six weeks and win the whole thing." It's most likely, though, that the icers and their fans won't have to take solace in that thought. The Blue feel that they can be tough in Moore's absence. And when he does get back-look out. to defense should have no trouble figuring THE ILLINOIS secondary is out what type of play the Illini outstanding. It's led by All-Con- will run.
