Thursday, November 7, 1974 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven Thursday, November 7, 1974 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven Wes By JEFF SCHILLER "There isn't a real good team on the Coast this season." -John McKay, USC coach. { For several years, "experts": have bemoaned the collapse of Big Ten football. Has anyone; heard similar rumors lately about the Pac-eight? Of course not-not with the influential West Coast press solidly pro- claiming the "fact" that Pac-8! play has never been better. The real truth is that Pacific Eight football is on the wane. The record bears out t h i s claim. UCLA was defeated by Big Ten non-entity Iowa, and Southern California was thrash- ed by Southwest also-ran Ar- kansas. Co-conference leader Stanford was winless in pre-con- ference play. Everyone else has been similarly unimpressive. NOR CAN this situation be viewed as in keeping with this year's rash of college football upsets. The facts are that Pac-8 teams are well below .500 in non-league encounters, and that1 even the best of them have been extremely inconsistent through- out the season. Coast racAW& e frantic DESPITE all this, the Pac-8 will still send a team to the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. With only three weeks left in the campaign, three teams, UCLA, USC, and Stanford are genuine contenders for the right to represent the conference in Pasadena. California would be in the race except that recruit- ing violations have rendered them ineligible for post-season play. Even Washington is a dark-horse. It is possible that a two or even three team tie will result. Stanford coach Jack Christian- sen explained what happens in that event. "If two teams tie for the title and one defeated the other, then the head-to-head winner repre- sents the conference. If, on the other hand, their game was a tie or if there is a multiple team tie, then out of conference records are used." Personalities complicate t h e situation. McKay's Trojans have been a bitter disappointment and the USC coach wants no part of a tie. "There won't be a tie," Mc- Kay emphasized. "And if there is one, we'd just as soon drop terribly, not because there's any schools, two probable breathers out and let someone else have comparison between the two before entertaining USC. Eastern Michigan University, a front-runner for the national title, has faced three Big Ten teams this season - Indiana, Michigan State and Michigan. Huron coach Bob Parks said Michigan is the best team East- ern has faced although the Bad- gers look best on paper. Parks said the hills on the University golf course should favor Michi- gan because Wisconsin isn't used to them. Wisconsin has five strong runners. Their times are faster than the Wolverines' but they haven't run on the same cour- ses. A contender for the indi- vidual Big Ten title, junior Tom Schumacher, leads the Wiscon- sin charge. If the race boils down to the time difference between the first and the fifth man and if Meyer keeps up with Schumach- er, then Michigan will win the race. The Wolverines average a 30-35 second time split and the Badgers 40-50. Michigan's coach Ron War- hurst predicts a close race withj Wisconsin favored and both the Spartans and Michigan chal-I lenging. However, Warhurst re- veiled that, "State hastfour good runners but has trouble with a fast fifth." Parks added, "Michigan State has one real good runner (Herb Lindsay) but their fifth man is always one minute be- hind their fourth. They don't even have a sixth or seventh man should one of the squad fall.
