Weekend
(Continued from Page 5)
The plot is overly intricate
at times, but Chaplin and Bloom
give fine performances in their
older man-younger woman ro-
mance.
Limelight is a sad yet opti-
mistic film.

GIANT TAPE BLOWOUT!

Day of the Dolphin
Campus
It's really a shame that ma-
jor directors become stereoyp-
ed into the level of filmmaking
they most frequently associate
with. Mike Nichols, most not-
ably related with such socially
domestic works as Who's Afraid
of Virginia Woolf? and Carnal
Knowledge, has, much to the
dismay of the critics, wandered
out of his field. He has entered
into the world of "simolstic"
entertainment, abandoning his
usually comlex deviations into
social behavior and chosing to
explore a much less disciplined
arena of fimmaking.
The Day of the Dolphin a
far cry from Nichols' previous
themes, but not from his mas-
tery of filmmaking. A relative-
lv simple vehicle dealing v i t h
inter - species communication,
Nichols has constructed an im-
mensely fascinating film that
serves as a much needed shot
in the arm to the world of pop-
Working from a screenplay by
former collaborator Buck Henry,
Nichols amply displays his tech-
nical and directoral capabilities.
Backed by the usual excellent
nerformance of George C. Scott,
Nichols maintains control over
his cast of both actors and dol-
phins. The magnificantly tail-
ored film is crescendoed by
George Delerue's unbelievably
beautiful score, one of the most
superb to accompany a film in
recent years.
It is grossly unfair to Nichols
to disregard this film on the
gro'inds of its notable ack of
silbstance. He has a proven
track record, and this film dies
not mar it in any way. If any-
thing, it enhances his reputa-
tion as a versatile director who
can successfully operate on
' more than one cinematic level.
jWhen one considers the trash
being peddled to the oublic these
days. The Day of the Dolphin
restores one's faith in rspon-
sible commercial filmmnoking.

Redbeard
Cinema Guild, Arch. An.
Sun., 8
No picture.by Akira Kuro-
sawa should be missed, even if
it does last three hours. Red-
4eard is masterfully pre sented,
tilizing every split iecnd of
film to develop with minute de-
tail an environment for tis
narrative.
The story takes place in a
19th-centurv hosoital run by Dr.
Niide (Redbeard), strongly por-
trayed by Japan's leading film
a-tor, Toshiro Mifune, w h o s e
humanitarian examole inspires
a vo"~g intern, portrayed by
Y,17o Kayama. Also, it follws
a series of case histories, cul-
' rinatin'g in Redbeard's rescue
of a mistreated child froria
brothel and her consequen-ial
rer'ibilitation.
Novices and experts in the
st"*dv of film as an 'rt form
will all benefit from this m,ri-
guing presentation of Redbeard.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Roting Stones
Fifth Forum
Ladies and Gentlemen, Mick
Jagger's lips have come to
town! Ladies and Gentlemen,
the Rolling Stones is touring the
country like a live band with
its own soundacrew; yet one of
the loudest movies ever fails to
get the crowd rocking.
Roland Binz's direction is
aimed at Jagger's head virtual-
ly the entire movie, leaving the
audience with a screen full of

lips (admittedly cute) and won-
dering where the band is that.
produces the Stones' music.
Jagger is entertaining enough
in his own right to capture at-
tention without the camera fo-
cusing only on him. True, we
are allowed to see bits of the
rest of the band, but the flash
editing makes these appear-
ances all too short.
Fortunately the sound kicks
out so well that it is almost
enough to make you get up and
dance. Recorded in quadro-
phonic sound, the Stones come
belting out at 3300 watts r.m.s.
