The raid marked the-first at- tempt by police, who have been generally restrained, to quash a demonstration before it start- ed. THE ARRESTS followed a major shakeup- yesterday by President Nguyen Van Thieu who fired three military corps commanders and 11 generals in response to complaints of cor- ruption from Washington and opposition demonstrators. Demonstrators in an antigov- ernment torchlight parade yes- terday night cheered when told of the firings, but their leader, the Rev. Tran Huu Thanh, a Catholic priest who heads an anticorruption movement, de- clared, "This is only a begin- ning." After the parade priest's fol- lowers staged an all-night pray- er vigil. They were to have joined the anticensorship dem- onstration in the morning. THE NEWSMEN had an- nounced in advance they would demonstrate Thursday and had gathered in front of their club in defiance of orders sealing off the downtown area. They claimed they had curfew pass- es and the police needed a court order to remove them. When police converged, the newsmen locked themselves in- to the club but the police smashed the door.
