Ohio State will inaugurate the
Michigan hockey season tonight,
opening a two game series at
Yost Ice Arena starting at 7:30
p.m. The two teams have met
but twice in history, one contest
a 21-0 Wolverine shellacking
back in 1963.
THE MAIZE and Blue are
definitely favoredwith 19 re-
turning letterman, almost as
many as the entire Buckeye
squad.
Ohio State hockey coach,
Gerry Walford, said, "Michigan
is one of the toughest teams we
will meet all year. You might
as well start with the best."
Since Ohio State is not in the
Western Collegiate Hockey As-
sociation and plays no other
WCHA teams, he is probably
right.
Though Walford is a graduate
student getting his degree in
physical education (he rides a
bike to practice), the Ohio State
team will not be in the best of
shape.

assists) and Doug Boyd (1 goal,

Scarlet and Grey defense. Two
freshmen from Ontario, Jim
Kish and Jim Colville, will also
help out. C ,
Sophomore center Bruce All-
worth was last year's scoring
leader with 19 goals and 34 as-
sists. Along with his leftwinger
Hugh Prentice (24 goals, 17 as-
sists) and Israel, these three
should provide the biggest men-
ace for Michigan's All-American
goalie, Robbie Moore.
Two-time letter winners Steve
Pankiw (18 goals, 19 assists),
Don Rogers and Dale Knaus
round out the right wing posi-
tion.
WILL OHIO STATE provide a
stern test for the men of Michi-
gan?
"We, will be stronger than we
were a year ago," promises
Walford. "We haven't had any
games yet so it is difficult to
evaluate just how good we will
be."
After this week's likely two
game sweep by Michigan, Ohio
State will revert back to the
weaker league with teams such
as Lake Superior and York Uni-
versity.
The games will be only the
preview to a probable winningf
season for Michigan. Wisconsin P

fight for number one will beginI

THE BUCKEYE'S have only
been practicing three weeks and
haven't held any scrimmages
other than an alumni game.
Walford surmised that "it al-
most did more harm than good
because we've only had organ-
ized hockey here for about 13
years."
Yet the Ohio team returns 14
lettermen and hopes to improve
last year's 16-13-2 performance.
"I think defense will be our
strongest point," observedWal-
ford. Goalie Dan Stergiou had a
3.9 goals against record last
season and is now in his second
year in the crease.
Though the lines haven't been
drawn up, Walford does have
some potential threats that
could stall Michigan's pre-'
season start.

Michigan center Angie Moretto dekes in for an apparently easy score against Colorado Col-
lege last year. Moretto, who paced the Blue ic ers with 25 goals last season, will get his chance
for his first goal tonight when Michigan takes o n Ohio State in the season opener at Yost Ice
Arena.

attrition lately, lost another
player yesterday with the an-
nouncement that Bill Ayler had
quit the team.
Ayler, a 6-4 senior forward
from Detroit, said his decision
was "something I felt had to
be done."
Coach Johnny Orr, who was
counting on Ayler for senior
leadership, said he was sur-
prised by the decision. "Billy's
a fine young man with a great
deal of pride. When you're a
senior, and you see you aren't

going to start, you lose some of
the feeling you once had for
basketball."
Ayler was long a favorite with
the Crisler Arena faithful, most-
ly for his spectacular leaping
ability.
Ayler started Michigan's first
three games last year, before
the coaches took the gamble of
playing Wayman Britt at for-
ward. His departure leayes Joe
Johnson and C. J. Kupec as the
only survivors of the famous
1971 Campy Russell freshman
class.

Martin, who magically turned
the Texas Rangers from a loser
into a winner in one year, was
named the Associated Press'
American League Manager of
the Year yesterday.
Martin, who drove a last-
place team into pennant con-
tention overnight, won a' hot
race with Bill Virdon of the
New York Yankees.
Sports writers and broadcast-
ers around the nation gave Mar-
tin 195 votes to 183 for Virdon,
who kept his Yankees alive in
the AL East race until the end
of the baseball season.
Virdon had just signed a two-
year contract with the Yankees

crime in the county has doubled; drug use is
a part of that problem. My opponent has done
little to solve it. We need to decriminalize
addiction, turning it into a health problem in-
stead. For harsh laws and stiff prison sen-
tences can not be a cure; but people, helping
people, can be."

iGridde Piceks]
The Daily Libels joined the pro football quarterback shuffle
yesterday when they shipped backup signal-caller Rich Lerner
to the Detroit Lions for quarterback Sam Wyche.
Coach Fielding H. Feldman, current Libel quarterback, said,
"The addition of Bubba, er, I mean Sam, should just make my
job that much easier, if you know what I mean."
The Libels denied the fact that Wyche had to be offered a
no-cut, no-trade contract in order to consummate the deal. "The
fact that he'll now be able to get his Gridde Picks in by midnight
Friday and have a shot at a free Pizza Bob pizza, just like every-
one else, is enough of a bonus," Feldman said.
Last week's winner was Jim Kinzig, who captured the prize
pie with an 18-2 record.
