Robber
pulls big
he ist at
local bank
By DAVID BURHENN
A bandit armed with nothing
more visible than a hand in a
coat pocket robbed the Wolver-
ine Towers branch of the Huron
Valley National Bank of about
$40,000 Monday afternoon.
And while~ the thief was busy
filling a wastebasket with bills,_
the branch's assistant manager
ate lunch in a back room, total-
ly'oblivious to the hold-up.
BANK SPOKESMAN Robert
Bush said that" an unidentified
robber walked into the bank
about 1:30 p.m. and announc-
ed he had a gun.,
"Nobody saw any weapon,"
Bush said. "but he had his coat
up around the collar and his
hand stuck in his pocket."
The bandit told the five tellers
and two customers in the bank
to lie down on the floor and
keep quiet, Bush said, and
forced one of the tellers to emp-
ty a cash drawer into a waste-
basket.
THE SUSPECT then fled -
$40000 and one orange waste-
basket richer.
Located across the street
from the Briarwood shopping
center, the bank opened just a
month ago and until Monday
had not been robbed.
The take was unusually high,
according to Bush, because the
thief also got the contents of
a night deposit bag being pro-
cessed by a teller, which ac-
counted for 75 per cent of the
Ihaul.
WHILE THE BANDIT was at
work in the front-part of the
bank. Assistant Manager Lou
Morris, filling in for the regu-
lar manager who was on vaca-
tion, was sitting in the rear
eating lunch.-
"I missed the whole thing,"
she said. Morris neither heard
nnr saw anthing indicating a
robbery was in progress and
didn't know it had hapened un-
til another emnloye rushed
back and told her.
