SPAGH ETTI: By DAVE WIHAK The Michigan hockey team will provide Wolverine fans with a preview of the 1974-75 season Saturday when the Blue and White teams take to the ice at Yost Arena in the annual intra-squad game. Thirty-one hockey players will have the chance to (display their talents, and these include 12 freshmen, nine sophomores, five juniors and five seniors. This scrimmage will determine to a large extent the crew of 26 or 29 players that Farrell will keep on the season roster. Coach Farrell is expecting a solid defensive corps this year, but has been somewhat dis- appointed in the training camp. "Our defensemen have been INTRA-SQUAD GAME AT YOST Dekers display talent 1. Still, we have more experience on de- fense this year, and the poten- tial for the best defense in the league." OFFENSIVELY Farrell says than the team will benefit even moretfrom increased maturity. "Our sophomores have display- ed increasing confidence and strength thus far in the training camp, and I feel that this will be important if we are to score more goals," claims Farrell. The Blue team will include six starters from last year's squad, of which three men in particular are significant to Far- rell's game plan. Center Angie Moretto, left winger Doug Lind- skog, and right-winger Pat Hughes are three players that Farrell said "have the potential to score 20 goals or more this year.- OTHER MEMBERS of last year's team that are skating for the Blues are Gary Morri- son, Gary Kardos, and Don Fardig. Kardostwas anassistant captain on last year's squad, and like Morrison, is a , hard checking forward. Don Fardig plays center, and Farrell claims "he can do it all. He's a cool performer under pressure, and is a good team VEAL SCALLOPINI: 1. Ala Marsala ............. . $2.95 2. Alla Francaise HOUSE SPECIALTY: Homemade Green Noodles ...... man." However, Farrell has not been satisfied with his overall play thus far in pre-season. "Don has not played as con- sistently as he should; he's capable of doing better. I think he's just a late starter." THE WHITE team is not with- out returning forwards, either for it features threeseniorstand two sophomores. Frank Werner, Randy Neal, and Paul Paris, are the seniors that will form one line in Saturday's game. Both Kris Manery and Russ Blanzy are centermen who have: been converted into right wing- ers. Both may see some action at center ice, though, depending on Farrell's plans. When any team begins a sea- son, the coach hopes for some outstanding performance by at least one of his recruits. As it turns out, Coach Farrell has stated that he has two such prize prospects in his camp this year. "We have two exciting. prospects in Dan Hoene, a re- cruit from Duluth, Minnesota, and Dave DeBol, a walkon from Detroit," enthuses Farrell. While Michigan offense looks promising to Coach Farrell, the defense and goaltending will cause him even fewer sleepless nights. "This season we are going to be very secure in goal- tending. All-American Robbie Moore is very dependable, but he was injured a couple times last year, and it hurt us be- cause we had no adequate re- placement." THIS YEAR Farrell, recruited a goalie from Minnesota, Frank' Zimmerman, and in addition acquired a walkon, Rick Pal- mer, from Detroit. "We are very pleased in both Zimmer- man and Palmer, and are ex- pecting good, solid goaltending from both." So it all boils down to Satur- day night and the efforts of 31 hockey players. The fateful de- cisions of the coach, the ten- sions involved, and some very inspired athletes should add up to a very exciting hockey game. This Saturday closes what could be a rewarding training camp for some, and for those on the losing end, a disappointing one. BillboardR Michigan, last year's Big Ten water polo champions, are scheduled to take on the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle campus, tonight at 8:30 in the Matt Mann Pool. The Wolverines will also come back on Saturdaysats2:00 to take on last year's runner-up, Indiana University. Indiana is expected to give Michigan its toughest challenge to date as they are stocked with several Olympic swimmers. The Wolverines, undefeated in their first five outings, will defend their title in home waters at Matt Mann.
