Before you adjust that stereo
knob, remember that six term
papers, 3,000 pages of assigned
reading, and a semester project
are due tomorrow. Don't panic
though - the University pro-
vides 26 libraries where you
can wring out your brain.
Two such institutions t h a t
you will eventually confront are
the Graduate and Undergrad-
uate (UGLI) Libraries. What
the latter lacks in a sterile, get-
down-and study atmosphere, the
former possesses in abundance.
DESPITE THE grad library's
maze of dead-end corridors and
musty book stacks that baffle
both underclasspeople and grads
alike, this library should be
your first research stop.,
The Grad (or Harlan Hatcher
Library) serves as an all-en-
compassing referral service, list-
ing the titles and locations of
all 2.5 million volumes in t h e
__.,, University Library system.
In addition, the Graduate Lib-
rary provides an inter-library
lending service which borrows
literature from non-University
sources on request.

to the card catalog room.
The grad library contains
three sets of "stacks" - east,
south and west. Because all
three sections possess separate
stairways and elevators, the only
link between them is the card
catalog, which is located on the
second floor.
THE EAST and west stacks,
which comprise the older part of
the building, are characterized
by narrow, dimly lit passages
which feature scads of dusty,
archaic volumes - some of
which are over a hundred years
old.
The more modern south stacks
feature rows upon rows of white
anesceptic cubicles known as
study carrells. The newer addi-
tion also houses the rare books
collection and the map room
which contains over 130,000
chaits.
You will either fall in love
with the less imposing U n d e r-
gradu ate Library and start
camping there till the e a rly
hours of the morning or, you
will seek less hectic surround-
ings.

are usually only let out for a
four hour period.
For specialized work, or to
break the UGLI/Grad mono-
tony, try one of the many other
University libraries.
The Law Library, which is
open to all students feature a
so-quiet-you-can-hear-a-pin-drop
atmosphere. The hanging chan-
deliers, vaulted ceiling and or-
nate gothic architecture give
this study haven a church-like
atmosphere.
THE CLEMENTS Library,'
which adjoins both the UGLI
and the Grad Library is more
of a museum than a reference
source.
Because the Clements Library
features manuscripts, displays
and newspapers covering th e
first 365 years of U.S. history,
you can quickly find an excuse
not to study there.
Also, don't neglect the off-
the-beaten-path study facilities
in the Union, League and dormi-
tory basements. An especially
plush study haven is the Rack-
ham lounge in the grad school.
Sink into an easy chair,. relax,
put your feeteup and drift off
while contemplating Byzantine
Art, diplomatic history or great
Russian poets . . .
The world uses more than one
million tons of chemical pesti-
cides per year, a British Broad-
casting Corp. program reported.

During the past two years, the University branch of a nation-
wide consumers' advocacy group has investigated a wide range
of problems confronting the general public.
Modeled after the "Nader's Raiders", the Public Interest
Research Group in Michigan (PIRGIM) was established at the
University in 1972, following a student referendum.
BILLING ITSELF as a social change organization, the group
is funded by students during registration who voluntarily choose
membership in the organization for $1.50 per semester.
Last; year, PIRGIM concentrated its efforts on investigating
such topics as nuclear waste transportation, toy safety, the hear-
ing aid market, and local median rent levels.
In a report entitled "Fallout on the Freeway," PIRGIM
member Marion Anderson detailed the possibilities of a nuclear
waste carrier being involved in a vehicular accident and the
subsequent probabilities of radioactive material escaping fromI
the lead-encased casks.
ACCORDING TO the report, not only are the casks poorly
inspected at time, but a vehicular accident involving fire might
cause severe structural damage to the casks - possibly causing
the release of the radioactive poison.
Last December, PIRGIM also, conducted a thorough pre-
holiday investigation of toy safety in Michigan-scouring toy
storesall over the state.
Their conclusion: holiday shoppers are still unprotected from
"negligent profit-minded toy manufacturers" who produce flam-
mable doll clothing, toxic model-engine fuel, and various sharp-
edged playthings.
PIRGIM OPERATES on the energy of student volunteers and
a full-time staff located at the Lansing headquarter. The Lan-
sing staff works pear-round, devoting attention to projects to
which students cannot involve themselves in full time.
The organization welcomes all suggestions for new investi-
gations and encourages students to visit the PIRGIM office of
the second floor of the Michigan Union to either volunteer their
services or simply to acquaint themselves with the group's
activities.
