Last year, Mallory's Miami squad led the nation in total defense. This year he inherited almost the opposite situation. Last year Colorado was last in the Big Eight in total defense giving up an average of 372.7 yards per, game. This season Mallory was hoping for better but in their' opening game in Baton Rouge against LSU, the Buffaloes gave up 437 yards, all on the ground. "NO, WE DON'T have any r e a l1y outstanding defensive stars. Our best are probably, linebacker Jeff Geiser and de- fensive back Rod Perry," com- mented Mallory. Geiser has started for two years with 146 tackles last sea- son while Perry, a transfer, from Fresno City College, was" a first team Junior College All-' American inn 1972. Fresno was third-ranked nationally. Eight defensive starters re- turn to the lineup from last year, but two of them are injured and will see limited action. The rov- ing back (Apache), tri-captain Greg Westbrooks, will suit up with a sprained ankle along with safety Jerry Martinez who has a bruised shoulder. Sophomore defensive halfback Tom Hilton will not suit up at all. Sophomore Mike Spivey will take Westbrooks spot in which he had enough playing time to letter last year. Kicking special- ist and reserve safety Tom Mackenzie will take Martinez' spot. BAGELS-LOX-CREAM CHEESE SUNDAY, Sept. 22-11 a.m. at HILLEL-1429 Hill St. COST 75c from imposing any sanctions against the University of Min- nesota if freshman Reed Larson plays hockey for the Gophers. Larson, former Minneapolis Roosevelt High School star, had been ruled ineligible by the NCAA because as a 17-year-old junior he signed an agreement with an agent to negotiate his contract when he turned profes- sional. Oral arguments were heard last Friday and Judge Lord is- sued his ruling Wednesday. "One of the reasons that the order was significant is that Reed Larson wouldn't have been able to get a scholarship unless the court issued the or- der," said Larson's attorney, Ron Simon. "The tender is- sued to Larson was given on the basis that his eligibility be restored by the Big Ten and the NCAA." "The Big Ten approved his eligibility but the NCAA denied it," Simon explained. Warren Brown, assistant ex- ecutive secretary of the NCAA, had testified that Larson vio- lated three regulations. He agreed to accept pay, he en- tered into a contract with a pro team and he entered into a con- tract with an agent.
