The Middies put up a strnng battle before falling 14-0, large- lv doe to their own miscues. For Michigan, it was one of the humblest victories of the past few years. This year Navy will again vis- it Ann Arbor hoping to give Michigan all it can handle. Thirty-three returning letter- men will be on hand from last year's 4-7 squad, but a n I y eight were starters. Head Coach George Welsh's first priority is to rebuild his offense. "In 1973, we had an experienced offensive team and an untried defense. This year, it's obvious our strength I i e s with our experienced defensive personnel while we must c o m e up with replacements on of- fense," Welsh said. Running back Cleveland Coop- er, an all-American candidate, will again dominate Navy's at- tack. Cooper broke the all-time Navy single season rushing re- cord last year with 898 yards in 221 carries. "I think Cleveland Cooper's name is synonymous with Navy football," said Welsh. "He's a little bigger this year and we believe he's more confident in his abilities to make the cut and read his blocks," Cooper might be joined at full- back by Bob Jackson who gain- ed 494 yards in 96 carries last year. Welsh, however, plans to Ship sinkers S. 14 Virginia S. 21 at Penn State S. 28 AT MICHIGAN 0. 5 Boston College 0. 12 at Syracuse 0. 19 at Air Force N. 2 Notre Dame N. 9 Citadel N. 16 at Georgia Tech N. 30 Army try Jackson at quarterback, and if the experiment works, Junior Turpuola would get the call at fullback. Tupuola's greatest as- set is his blocking ability, a worthwhile quality with Cooper as a running mate. The Middies' offensive line is new, but all the starters are let- termen. The Cardinals went on to complete a 7-4 season losing only to top ten teams - Penn State (20-6), UCLA (59- 30), and USC (27-26). This year the gridders from Palo Alto re- play all four of these giants and will be more than happy to topple any or all of them and earna spot at the top, The first problem for Coach Jack Christiansen, an ex-De- troit Lion, is the quarterback position. Historically a produc- er of outstanding quarterbacks _- John Brodie, Jim Plunkett, and Don Bunce, among others -the Cardinals must replace Mike Boryla, the key to the '73 Stanford attack. Sophomore Mike Cordova, who is already being compared to Jim Plun- kett, will compete for the posi- tion against sophomore Guy Benjamin . and junior Jerry Waldvogel. THE RUNNING game, a weak spot last year, will have leading rusher Scott Laidlaw back at fullback. Helping out in the backfield will be Ron Inge, Sig Ostrom, Dave Tenn, and Andy Kolesnikow. The passing attack looks to be strong as' usual. Ten lettermen receivers are returning includ- ing all-Pac-8 Bill Singler who made 31 catches for 501 yards last year. Eric Test and Tony Hill are also likely to be prime targets. On the offensive line three starters have graduated - Bruce Blackstone, Bill Reid and Glen Stone. But the Cards have plenty of experience form- ing the blocking corps as no less than nine lettering linemen return. KEITH ROWEN, a two-year starter at left tackle who runs the 40 yard dash in 5.0 seconds and can bench press 400 pounds, leads off the list of returnees and is a likely candidate for post-season honors. The defensive backfield, which has led the Pac-8 three years in a row in pass defense, will be the biggest problem Coach Christiansen has to solve. Five lettermen including three starters were lost to grad- uation and only four lettermen are returning. Right safety "Doc" Blanchard is the only proven veteran with Gerald Wilson, Duf Sundheim, and Kelly Walker likely to complete the backfield. The linebackers are all re- turning for the Cardinals.
