Saturday, September 14, 1974 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Poge Seven NO NATIONAL POWER l Buffalo burgers- not all that tough:: By BILL STIEG Michigan's second game this year is against Colorado, and though the two have never met before, a kind of rivalry already exists. First of all, the Sept. 21 clash will add yet another grain of evidence to one side or the other in the never-ending de- bate as to which conference is college football's best. And secondly, there is a personal stake in the game for coaches Bo Schembechler and Bill Mallory, both former head men at Miami of Ohio. But the big attraction of this Buffalo bill S. 14 at Louisiana State S. 21 AT MICHIGAN S. 28 Wisconsin 0. 5 at Air Force 0. 12 Iowa State 0. 19 Oklahoma 0. 26 at Missouri N. 2 Nebraska N. 9 Kansas N. 16 at Oklahoma State N. 23 at Kansas State game is the inter-conference rivalry. The Big Ten, Big Eight, Pac-Eight, and the Southeast Conference have all claimed su- premacy at one time or another -often at the same time. But the final say always comes on the playing field, so one can be sure both teams will be out to prove their point. The Wolverines last experi- ence with a Big Eight represent- ative was a forgettable 40-17 whipping at the hands of Mis- souri in 1969, Schembechler's first season at Michigan. In- cluding that game, Michigan's record against the Big Eight is five wins, three losses, and one tie. Colorado's record is identi- cal against the Big Ten. But things have changed in the Big Eight since '69, and that conference now resembles the "Big Two and all the rest" for- mat of the modern Big Ten. Oklahoma and Nebraska pres- ently hold more than their share of Big Eight talent, not unlike Michigan and Ohio State of the Big Ten. Gone are the Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado threats of a few years ago. Gone, too, are stars Charlie Davis and Herb Orvis of the Colorado team that beat Ohio State in 1971. The Buffaloes were 10-2 that year, 8-4 in 1972, and 5-6 last year. The appointment of Mallory as head coach has prompted the usual "new era" talk that tradionally accom- panies such a move, but even a new coach won't stop Colo- rado from losing at least four games this season. The Buffs have lost about half their starters to gradua- tion, mostly from the offense. The offensive line is fairly in- tact, but the backfield features three relatively untried players. They are David Williams, who won the starting quarterback position from last year's regu- lar C 1 y d e Crutchmer; Billy Waddy, a speedy sophomore tailback who had a great sea- son on the freshman team last fall: and Terry Kunz, a junior fullback who was redshirted last year. The only familiar figure in the backfield is wingback Dave Logan, and All-American candi- date this year. Logan was named second team All-Big Eight in football and basketball last year. - But Mallory, a former as- sistant under Woody Hayes and Schembechler's highly s u c c e s s f u l successor at Miami, would rather talk about his team's defense. He claims the Buffaloes will be modeled after Hayes's Buck- eyes, with defense the num- ber one priority, a solid run- ning attack second, and pass- ing a distant third, though not as distant as in Columbus. Colorado has six of its defen- sise starters returning, with a g o o d, experienced secondary Jeff Turcotte and a questionable line, depth- wise. The Buffs gave up more than 22 points a game last year, though, so that secondary may have more than an average workout trying to catch Mich- igan's running backs. There are a couple more fac- tors working against Colorado. The Buffaloes first game, a week before coming here is against another national power, Louisiana State. Add to that Michigan's home record (unde- feated except for that Missouri game since '69) and the Big Ten supporters can probably chalk one up for their side. Colorado's big gun: Billy Waddy WELCOME.
