Page Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY Saturday, September 14, 1974 P6ForTE IHIAtAIYSaudy Sptmbr 1. 97 DEFEND NATIONAL TITLE Libels: undefeatable By "WHOOP" CRANE Which nationally feared foot- ball squad has won its games by the biggest point spreads in the past few years? Which gridiron machine has rolled out more consecutive victories than any other team in history? And, which team ;s stle to recruit the ablest p!ayers year in and year out without fail? If you guessed Okla'soma, USC, A I a b a m a, Ohio S*.ate, Penn State, or Michigan, among others, you would be wrong! THE POWERHOUSE of this great country thrives right iere in Ann Arbor and is kown to the loyal rooters as the Dtily Libels. Libels for short. The Libels, yea the Libels, won games by point spreads of 77-0 (against Vassar), 110 to zip and 35-7 (in one of the team's poorest showings last season). These slaughters unfolded be- fore full-fledged opponents, for when opponents forget to show up, the Libels really step on the gas. (The Daily uses the term "forget" loosely. ?ctually opponents face game time shak- ing in their boots, and tend to favor forfeit.) The Libels have now amassed a victory string of 712 games, dating back to 1903. Even the last loss was a disputed one. On a Saturday afternoon in 1903, a referee, reputed to be legally blind, marked a ball 17 yards short and the Libels were forced to punt. Their momen- tum dwindled soon after, not because they gave up, but be- cause the referee walked up to an u n u s u a 11 y fat spectator, greeted her, and promptly call- ed the Libels for having too many men on the field. But the real story each year with the Libels is its players. Personalities which eventually mesh each campaign and strive for football perfection. In fact, trivia experts neglect the Li- bels. Arguing over which Libel team is superior is futile. What do Libel rooters look forward to in 1974? Basically, promises heads will roll if the Libels don't gain 10,001 yards on the ground this season. The players identify with Feldman. He's so kindly. Feldman laments the loss of gargantaun "constricTOR," tal- ented "Escanaba" Bob McGinn, and fleet-footed "Hank" Longo, (otherwise known as "Felonious Assault"). He also misses the "Cornshucker" and "Hang 'em high" Heuer. Tears come to Feldman's eyes when he thinks about the pressure packed PAT's kicked by "Gorilla" Greer one short year ago. But he has immortalized his feel- ings about how he'll miss the 'ole gang like so: "constric- TOR" who?" INDEED LIBEL f r tu n es aren't in a trust fund. The Stork has withdrawn fine new talent. Rumor has it that Dave "Melville" Wihak from Sas- katchewan gave up a spot on Michigan's hockey team to play for the finely tuned Libels. (If only he'd stop punting on third down!) The alternative duo of Kahler and Cogsdill, with the help from "Happy" Hastings and "Rajah" Rossiter (the REAL brains of the team) offer this final scout- ing report: "With "Ernest" Demingway healthy (he shot himself last y e a r), "Leaping" Liebster's lightning lopes, "Mad Masher" Merker's moves, "Loopenark" Hertz's Saturday sight spirit, Flaherty's return and Crane's whoop, we're a cinch for the national championship. Cogsdill adds aptly: "Being the place-holder, I can't see get- ting much rest." Tough luck "One-play"! -1973 'A Att Yds Ave LP 5Suttleswsorth 193 745 3.8 155 Heater114s6e 5.8 31 Chapman 111 542 4.8 53 Franklin 101 425 4.2 49 Bell 8464 1.2 04 Thornbladh 52 206 3.9 31 Cipa 24 e0 5.8 15 Iaslerig 7 63 9.0 34 seal 1 2 t0.0 20 Gustafson 1 11 11.0 11 Lytle 3 6 0.0 3 PASSING alt eom int yds tds Franklin 67 36 5 534 3 Cipa 35 13 2 163 1 Casey 3 1 1 10 0 RECEIVING no yds tds LP Seal 14 254 3 46 luaslerig 13 210 1 41 K. But they're report- edly so quick, a Libel opponent is sure to have his laces tied together before he can read the number on a Libel jersey-far less a Libel play.
