W) - C e s a r Chavez' United Farm Workers Or- ganizing Committee has scored a second major breakthrough in an interunion struggle t h a t has sharply curtailed production in the nation's "salad bowln" Freshpict Foods, Inc. announc- ed Friday it is canceling its con- tract with the Teamsters Union and will begin negotiations with UFWOC. UFWOC claims support of 90 per cent of the workers in the 100-mile-long Salinas Valley, which grows 90 per cent of the nation's head lettuce. Inter Harvest Co., the majorl U.S. lettuce producer, h a d an- nounced earlier this week it was beginning talks to switch its un- ion agreements from the Team- sters to UFWOC. Other pickets have kept Inter Harvest idle, how- ever. In Los Angeles, William R. Tin- cher, b o a r d chairman of Purex Corp., Lt d., parent company of Freshpict, said negotiations with Chavez' union "would begin im- mediately with no conditions at- tached." Tincher said that if negotia- tions proceed in good faith "the great majority of growers a n d shippers in Salinas will join Pu- rex in granting recognition to UFWOC-AFL-CIO and in imme- diate negotiations." The contention was denied by Les Hubbard, spokesman for the Salinas Valley Growers, Shippers and Vegetable Association. The P rex "estimate of the sit- uation is wrong," he said. "There w a s a meeting of growers,... there is no thought of joining' Freshpict in their negotiations." Teamsters supporters, including farmers and growers, picketed In- ter' Harvest Friday and blocked harvesting and marketing of-crops to protest the negotiations with UFWOC. The pickets said t h e y had no union affiliation, but Teamsters drivers refused to cross the picket lines. WASHINGTON (R) - For the first time, the nation's railroads have been ordered to disclose the extent to which they control, or are controlled byCindustrial con- 3glomerates. The Interstate Commerce Comn- nission, issuing the order as part of a railroad freight rate case on Friday, said the information re- quired will give the ICC its first ' clear picture of the railroads' corporate structures. While the order does not require Erailroads to disclose names of stockholders, it does call for re- vealing who owns them and who they own. The information, to cover the calendar year 1969, must be submitted by Nov. 2. Under the order, Class 1 rail- roads must disclose: -Names of affiliated companies and the amount and percentage of their gross income obtained from the roa - the railroad. -Whether affiliated companies, partnerships or individuals con- trol the railroad o whether t he railroads control the affiliates. -Contracts between railroads and affiliated companies. -Amount paid by affiliates to railroad officers, owners, or their I near relatives, divided between that paid for services and that I paid in dividends. -A statement of income f o r each affiliate with which a rail- road had transactions during cal- endar year 1969 Because of the week-old strike by UFWOC, growers said, lettuce still is being' shipped in limited volume. Thousands of a c r e s of ripe lettuce and other vegetables were withering in untended fields. The Teamsters have agreed to let UFWOC have full jurisdiction over field hands, but growers re- fused to rescind contracts signed with Teamsters the month before. Some200 growers formed a sol- id front. I. " HEBREV/ SPEAKING CLUB Hebrew conversation in an enjoyable, informal setting. All welcome.
