Pettinger as the Badgers pre- pared for their upcoming meet with the potent Wolverine tank- ers, Friday at Matt Mann Pool. If one looks at 1 a s t year's showing by Wisconsin in t h e Big Ten meet he would find that the Badgers scored 147 points in a fifth place finish. But 127 of those points are gone, as Don Dunfield, an A 11- American, graduated, taking several other seniors with him. In addition, two of last year's freshmen w h o helped score those other 20 points in relay races are not swimming for the Badgers this season. Wisconsin's mentor also men- tionedatherfact that he did not have a very good year recruit- ing. No blue chippers are mov- ing up through the ranks to give the Badgers scoring punch, and only about three or f o u r others are considered to be bet- ter than average." Pettinger considers Michigan to be thesecond best squad in the conference with strengths in diving, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. He believes the best events for his squad in their dual m e e t Friday will be the sprints, where he has Drew Gorrell, a senior who finished seventh in the Big Tens. In the diving events Wiscon- sin should be nearly on a par with t h e Wolverines, boasting senior Tony Rueff, who finish- ed 12th in last summer's AAU national meet. But Michigan will have the home pool advantage, and this should enable the Michigan div- ers to be successful in both div- ing events. In addition the Wol- verine's ace diver, Dick Rydze, is much more experienced in close,'competition than Rueff is. Wisconsin is hoping t h a t tackle B adgers enough of their young swim- mers can come through for them to keep the Wolverines f r o m running away with the meet. The Badgers hope to break into the top half of the confer- pnce this year, expecting to end up about fifth or sixth. Wisconsin opened the season against two non-conference foes, Northern Illinois and Western Illinois. The Badgers won both meets, but neither opponent proved much of an obstacle. Pettinger thinks his team will be able to provide a few excit- ing races this weekend, but warned that his players were tired after working hard for the last few weeks. He added that they were in g o o d condition, though. Michigan will also do combat with Southern Illinois at the start of the winter term. That meet will be played away on Jan. 7. J t.: : n: For the student body: FLARES by Levi Farah Wright Tads Sebring CHECKMATE -- Coming, off an excellent, if surprising showing last weekend, the Michigan wrestling team now prepares for their n e x t test, the Midwest Open. Held at LaGrange, Illinois December 29 and 30, the tournament is con- sidered a major test for enter- ing teams. In fact, Michigan head coach Rick Bay considers t h e meet "just as tough as the NCAA's, and in some respects even tougher." An open tournament, entries are not restricted to col- lege wrestlers, but anyone who is a high school graduate may enter. This means that many former collegiate grapplers can compete, increasing the quality of the individual competition. The team competition is just as tough, since all of the strong squads from the Midwest en- ter. Iowa State, the defending NCAA titlist, will be present, as will Michigan State, the nation- al runner-up. Other entries will be from such powers as Okla- homa State, Oklahoma, and Iowa. Last year, the Wolverines finished a surprising second in the meet. The victory over Navy was es- pecially important, as the Mid- shipmen previously had lost only three meets in the last five years. It was also Navy's first defeat at home in the last eight seasons. According to Bay, the team wrestled better against Mary- land, even though the competi- tion was not as tough. Against the Terrapins, the Wolverines lost only one match and drew two others. The one loss was by Tim Cech, who had a draw un- til he missed a takedown in the closing seconds, and was taken down himself and lost the match. The bright spots on the team were the positions manned by freshmen. Jerry Hubbard w a s the big surprise, winning both of his matches at 150 lbs. One of his victories was against the captain of the Maryland team, a far more experienced senior. At 158, sophomore Mitch Men- drygal won both of his match- es. In the higher weights, Walt Sexton and Rick Bolhouse have also been pleasant surprises. Freshman Sexton, who is de- scribed as a "natural," won his two matches, and Bolhouse, a sophomore, is wrestling "better than last year."
