(Continued from Page 2)
away, no build up-it's there.
Buddy is harder and his riffs are
shorter. He punches you - like
in "Hoochie Koochie Man," or
"Fever," each riff building up to
the next. Some people are either
going to call his break into the
"Sunshine of Your Love" theme
showmanship or showing off. He
started off on a hard beat teas-
ing the audience first with some
left-handed picking behind his
back, then with a drumstick
with his axe suspended on the
floor.
Then Luther and Johnny Win-
ter came out. At first it seemed
as though they didn't musically
understand each other, but soon
they were jamming again, toss-
ing off twelve bars, alternating
between vocals and solo. Fin-
ally, they attacked the tune to-
gether, with Johnny sliding and
picking at the same time, Lu-
ther sparkled. Luther kind of led
things. He builds a tune up, first
almost meticulously, caressing
each rising note until the final
phrases.
Which brings us to Otis, and,
maybe, the only cause for dis-
appointment. The crowd w a s
emotionally worn and didn't
seem to understand him. Otis 'is
a mature craftsman of blues,
and, coming after essentially gut
performances by Guy, Allison
and Winter, the crowd wasn't
prepared to listen to lyrics as
well as feel them.
If they had, they would have
understood.
When Otis talks about being
kicked out of his house cause
he couldn't pay the rent" or his
"society woman," you know it's
the truth. Otis ~ a gentleman.
He plays for you, not himself.
And when he talks to you, he
ain't proud but he's giving you a
lesson. It's really a shame so
many people left before they
heard the message.

One more thing. A lot of peo-
ple using and digging the Ann
Arbor Bues scene seem to be
kind of spoiled by it. They think
it's going to be there whetber
they support it or not It was
cool that so many l)COP]~ came
to support it Suncla.y night and
these incredible blues greats
came for nothing, just to see the
scene survive. But the thing
is that a brnefit shouldn't have
to happen. Big Mamma Thorn-
ton once said rock and roll was
just the blues speeded up. When
people neglect the blues, they're
neglecting th~ii' roots and they
are neglecting themselves.

In which the candid connoisseur answers questions
about Beer, and th~ drinking of same.
DEAR ED: im burned up because
after a weekend romp in the woods,
I forgot to put a leftover 6-pak
of Budweiser in the refrigerator.
Everybody says you can't chill beer
twice, so what should I do?
FUMING ~
DEAR FUMING: First,
cool off, pal. Then cool
off that Bud~ to your
heart's content (or

There's no problem,
because a really good
beer like Budweiser
is just as good when
you ice it twice,
But I can't resist
mentioning that there is an
