Page Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, December 8, 1970 PaeToTH _HGN AL usdy eebe ,17 music Blues.. By MARK DILLEN When B. B. King played the Fillmore East a couple of years} ago, legend has it that he was afraid when he saw an aud- ience comprised of predominate- ly white kids. Most whites h a d never really known the blues. Yet after he went out and play- ed his set the crowd was on its feet. It was the beginning of a new time. Young white folk. were beginning to discover the blues. By now the blues has been with this new audience for a while, learning that it's been here all along. People (as Buddy Guy said Sunday night) were just turning their backs to it; they had to learn that the blues is when you hurt, when you got-. ta say that strong something; that the blues is everyone. So, the men and women of blues became a family to these people and when they come to visit, it's like a returning part of y o u r long-missed family. Part of that family came back Sunday night for the benefit of the Ann Ar- bor-Blues Festival and they told us where they've been. And we discovered that they've been away too long, even though they left us just last August. All our brothers and sisters In the family were there to greet them. Yet, for some reason after their visit, you don't want to commit yourself. There was energy there and some people felt that energy at different times. Judging Sunday's b lu e s benefit is like trying to dictate which of your brothers you like w the best when you dig them all. th But now that we've got that off, SO let's talk a bit about the music s itself and the musicians who put to it on. w There was Dave Alexander, w Luther Allison, Buddy Guy, w Johnny Winters and Otis Rush. a Dave led off and there w a s v something about him that left ha you with mixed feelings a b o u t A ' W w se c ba T ba a la er 'for when . you hurt' DIAL 8-6416 ENDING WEDNESDAY "A fantastic movie about man's future! Only rarely in the turmoil of human events does a work of fiction speak so clearly, with such brutal directness to the core truths of the condition of life that no matter what one's beliefes, there is no denying its validity. 'JOE' is approached for sheer impact and importance only by 'Z,' 'PATHS OF GLORY,' and the final scenes of 'EASY RIDER.' No one conceiving this film, a year ago, could have known how loudly it would speak today. It is a one- in-a-million." NATNMERAL, ag 35 N. APLERD.
