KITCHEN Some amazing holiday goodies Oatmeal Toll House Cookies HEN THE Fitzgerald family comes home for Christmas from all parts of the country, Mrs. Fitzgerald always fixes her family's favorite chocolate chip cookies. So good are they, that. Sara even eats the dough raw sometimes ! Here's the best known secret recipe: 1 cup shortening % cup brown sugar r cup white sugar 2 unbeaten eggs 1 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon soda 2 cups quick oatmeal 1 cup cropped nutmeats 1 package sweet chocolate bits 1 teaspoon vanilla Cream shortening, white and brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and add to mixture. Add rest of ingredients, stir- ring well. Can be chilled over- night or baked immediately. Drop by teaspoonsful o n t o greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 min- utes. Eggnog THE HOLIDAY season isn't complete without eggnog. But you have to be sober to make it well because the pro- cess is time-consuming and dif- ficult. It's also expensive. But it's fun: 36 eggs 1 gallon of thick whipping cream 1'? lbs. of sugar 1 pint of whiskey 1 pint of rum 1 pint of gin 1 pint of brandy Break eggs and separate eggs and yolks. You should have 36 whites, 36 yolks and at least 72 shells. Whip whites of eggs and yolks of eggs separately until very light. Divide the sugar, putting half with the whites and the rest with the yolks. Then beat until very light. Then combine the sugar yolks and sugar whites. Beat thoroughly (or until light). Add whiskey to cook eggs. Whip the cream and add it gradually to the mixture. Mean- while, add the gin, rum and brandy at intervals. If the finished, beaten pro- duct is too thick, thin with sweet milk. Add sugar if needed. Beat, of. course until smooth, velvety, drinkable. Famous Relish P OB BIER learned this when - he was in third grade, and in spite of its simplicity, people keep asking him for the recipe. The vagueness of the measure- ments corresponds with t he vagueness of his memories of third grade: 2.lb. bag of cranberries 3 or so oranges some walnuts raisens, if you like Pick the rotten cranberries out and wash the rest. Cut the oranges into sections, leaving the peels on. Run the cranberries, orange sections, shelled nuts and op- tional, raisens through a meat- grinder. See that the relish is mixed evenly, cover, and put in the refrigerator, Have a Beautiful Christmas Get ready, go beauti-i ful for the holiday dofsoon. e'll.styl festivities.
