"You try talking about politics in the New York Times," sa ys Greenspun, "and unless you're pretty damned neutral or clever, it'll be taken out." On top of editorial problems, critics suf- fer an even more devastating handicap:j lack of copy space. Part of this is manage- ment's decision, and-a reporter confides that' "there is an unstated attitude, though no- body would admit this, that movies are to be tolerated." Most of it, however, is just an- other one of the constraints that any daily newspaper imposes. Canby, being the only official critic on the Times' roster (Weiler is called 'movie editor,' and the rest are 're-I porters'), never gets out; the others seldom have more than a column regardless of how important their film is. "You cut your ideas," Greenspun says. "I find myself developing a very convoluted style as a result because I'm trying to say as much in any one sentence as I can. It's the worst frustration. "What it is," says Greenspun, " is thati the Times is careful when it hires somebody; they know they're not going to get a kind of; Jill Johnson stream-of-consciousness crit- icism. They wouldn't even be able to pub- lish it because there is nothing in the Times' style book that allows for printing a non- sentence. So it turns out t h a t everyone winds up writing like the New York Times." Epilogue It was Sunday. Early afternoon. The City Room was empty, quiet. Occasionally a phone would ring, and it would sound rather plaintive sitting there unanswered. Weiler and I sat there alone. "Andre Sennwald," he mused. "Andre Sennwald. He was quite a good critic, you know." "What happened to him?" "What happened? He's dead. Committed suicide, I think. Maybe writing all those re- views drove him to it."
