The Trojans, last year's 10-3 winner over Michigan in the Rose Bowl and the Pacific-8 represent- ative to that New Year's Day clas- sic the last four seasons were the odds-on favorites to make it five in a row this year. In the pre- season polls, Southern California was ranked third behind O h i o State and Texas and garnished about one-fourth of the first place votes. But Southern Cal's season has been a disaster. Head Coach John McKay's team is only 5-3-1, its For the Student Body: DENIM FLARES 4.88' Regular $8.00 Quality worst record in over ten years. . After starting off with an easy 42-21 victory over Alabama, the Trojans were tied by Nebraska 21- 21. In that game, USC had to come from behind 1 a t e in the fourth quarter to manage the draw. Two easy romps over Iowa and Oregon State followed but suddenly, the Trojans collapsed. Stanford, this year's represent- ative to the Rose Bowl, upset USC 24-14 as the Indians struck to an early 21-7 lead and then played a ball control game to do w n the Trojans. Following a narrow victory ov- er a strong Washington squad, 'Southern California was offed two more times by the Oregon Ducks and the lowly California Golden Bears before thumping Washing- ton State last Saturday, 70-33. In the current Associated Press poll, the Trojans are ranked a lowly eighteenth, a mere f o u r points from oblivion. The season has obviously been a disappointment to McKay since this years team w a s, on paper, slightly better than last year's un- defeated squad. For the opening game, the Tro- jans fielded no less than 11 bona fide All-America candidates and had amazing depth. This year's sophomore crop was the best that McKay had come up with in re- cent years. USC had returned its entire offensive backfield, the most integral part of a good at- tack. Although the defense had lost a few men, sophomores and junior college transfers were able to plug most of the holes. Against Oregon and Cal, they could only manage a total of two touchdowns and a field goal. Against Stanford, they were stop- ped twice inside the five-yard line late in the game including once on about the one-foot line. Only in the game with Nebraska did the Trojans look respectable. ON A STATISTIC sheet, USC looks impressive. Clarence Davis, the team's leading rusher, has 837 yards and, with two games to go, looks like a cinch to make the magic 1000-yard mark again. Sam Cunningham, the fullback, has powered for almost 500 yards and has been the key man in short yardage situations. Jones has been impressive at quarterback, as the talented jun- ior has completed 100 passes out of 213 attempts for almost 1700 yards. In addition, Jones has only had five passes intercepted. But, unfortunately for the Tro- jans, they have been unable to come up with the big play in the clutch situations like they have in recent years. Last year, for exam- ple, USC nipped the UCLA Bruins in the final minute on a l on g Jones to Sam Dickerson bomb to win the Rose Bowl berth. Although Southern Cal is out of this year's Rose Bowl game, next year's squad should be in the running for the championship. Jones, Cunningham, and a horde of other Trojans will return for another season. 4 9' -Daily-Thomas R. But their imminent departure shouldn't be fatal by any means, for as Lauterbur observed, "Most of the star performers are jun- iors." Especially praiseworthy are Ealey and 6'-1", 200 lb. sophomore Joe Schwartz, who has proved capable of playing any one of the backfield positions. Much to the dismay of the MAC, Lauterbur expects "another class team" in 1971. But the Rockets had better be wary. The rest of the league is becoming understandably restless. dent big' football scene Gridde Pickings I The Horror Each Student Eventually Confronts On Not Doing Work On Research Shows That People Aren't Ready To Openly Feel Wary Of Revolution.
