Stephen emphasized that "I: spend a lot of time on that other plane" higher than material con- siderations. The caravan group's attitude toward established social institu- tions seems never hostile and of- ten surprisingly receptive. "School isn't that bad," said, Nancy, "if you are learning some- thing you can use. Agriculture, chemistry is useful. Engineering is useful. We have an engineer on our caravan." Stephen will be speaking several places around Ann Arbor through Saturday, and tonight will address all interested people in Rackham Amphitheatre at 7:30 p.m. UAW President Leonard Wood- cock emphasized that yesterday's agreement covers only national issues in the United States. At-the-plant agreements, which supplement the national pact, still must be reached at 70 of 155 local U.S. bargaining units, including 19 of the company's 24 domestic car and truck assembly plants. Woodcock said he was "certain" the GM council and the union's 25-member International Execu- tive Board would authorize con- tinuing strikes at plants where local issues still are unresolved. S "Theprompt conclusion of the rema in in g local agreements," Bramblett said, "is essential to the resumption of full production, a task for both our management and the union. "GM has every confidence in the capabilities of the UAW lead- ership, our plant management per- sonnel and the good judgment of our employes working together to resume production promptly." Bargaining continues on a na- tional contract covering GM'S 22,100 Canadian workers. Local pacts have been settled at five of GM's seven Canadian negotiating units. Inaddition to the effect it has had on GM sales and earnings on GM dealers and on the individual workers, the strike has had a widening effect in other areas of the nation's economy. Thousands have been laid off in supplier industries and state and local governments which dependE on tax revenues from the world's largest manufacturer have had their revenues curtailed. GM has operations at 119 sites in 18 states across the country and bought $11.5 billion worth of goods and services from its 39,000 suppliers in 1969. 'b 12 t 1 S d ci i I 336 S.
