Their scrappy at- tack, aided by numerous Illini miscues, produced an early 9-0 lead which blossomed into a 33-0 romp at the game's end. "The backs played very well while the forwards were a little sluggish," commented injured club president Hank Lukaski. "This year's been a complete reversal over the last few. It's usually the forwards who are dominant." Michigan crossed the goal line nine times to set a Palmer field record. However, the kicking was rather poor as only three of the nine tries were converted. The Blues started fast as fly- half Peter Hooper scored twice in the opening few minutes. Terry. Larrimer then busted through the struggling Illini defense to score the first of two tries to make the 1score 9-0. Peter Swift was awarded a try+ when he was tackled in the Illini in-goal attempting to recover a loose ball. The referee called In- terference and the Blues were on the board again. Winger Tom Kuzma completed the scoring in the first half on a sharp passing combination by the three-quarters line. Their play in the second half was hardly indicative of a first- class rugby power, but they were constantly provided with an open- ing through the paper-thin Illini defense. Larrimer then scored his second try early in the second half as he dove across the Illini line. Scrum- half Cleland Child converted and Michigan widened the gap to 20-0. Child then calmly avoided sev- eral Illinois tacklers as he scam- pered 35 yards for a try which was converted by Peter Swift. Wing- forward Tom Raboine concluded the Michigan scoring with two un- usual tries. The first came on a scrum at the Illini five yard line. The scrum was shoved into the line and Raboine fell on the ball as it came out. The second came as he re- covered a Michigan kick in the Illini in-goal. The "B" games was also a mis- match as the Michigan Golds roll- ed to an easy 15-0 victory. Inside- center Dean Daggett scored three times while Wally Carrarra and John Bowers each scored once.
