Detroit's first victory in five games snaped the Stanley CupI champions' unbeaten streak at 16 games going back into last spring's playoffs. The Bruins won five and tied their other start this season, and one of the victories was an easy 7-3 conquest of Detroit in Bos- ton's season opener. Knicks click NEW YORK - Willis Reed -Daily-Jim Kresslach MINNESOTA'S Ernie Cook (30) seems to have found a hole in Michigan's defense, but he is about to met by onrushing Wolverines Henry Hill (39) and Frank Gusich (14). In fact, holes in Michigan's defense were-at a premium, as the Wolverines made the Golden Gophers their sixth straight victim, trouncing them 39-13 last Saturday. TAYLOR, SCHUMA CHER OK Bleset for Badger battle throw by Don Adams, a basket by Larry Siegfried and two free throws and a field goal by Calvin Murphy pulled them within two points at 109-107 with 50 seconds left. After Dick Barnett, who had 26 points, missed a jumper, Reed re- bounded with 24 to go and added a foul shot 18 seconds later for the j clincher. Reed scored 11 of his 24 points in the final quarter, helping to overcome San Diego's surge behind Murphy and Adams. Murphy, hit- ting 14 points in the period, fin- ished with 25 with Adams hitting 10 of his 12 points in the final session. Barnett's 20 points helped forge a 60-49 New York halftime spread. But San Diego pulled within 80- 77 and it was 84-79 entering the fourth period. Flyers fly PHILADELPHIA - The Phila- delphia Flyers scored three third period goals last night, whipping the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 in a National Hockey League game. The Kings took a 1-0 lead with4 just over two minutes remaining in the second period, when a shot by Matt Ravlich deflected off the stick of teammate Doug Robinson and skidded 25 feet to beat Flyer goalie Doug Favell. The Flyers tied it at 1:17 of the third on a slap shot by Wayne Hillman, then moved ahead at 7:01 when Earl Heiskala's shot from the corner was kicked in by LA goalie Jack Norris. By TERRI FOUCHEY Fears that another position would be hit with a lack of depth problem due to injury have been alleviated as linebacker Mike Tay- lor was pronounced fit and ready to play yesterday. Taylor, who twisted his knee wring the game with Minnesota last week, was originally thought to be injured seriously enough to prevent him from playing against Wisconsin this Saturday. When asked about his knee, he said, "It's all right." Another Wolverine who has had the scepter of injury surrounding Ain this week is tight end Jerry Schumacher. Schumacher h a s been practicing with his left wrist taped due to a sprain. According to head coach Bo Schembechler, "It's just a sprain, and it won't hinder him in the game but we don't want him aggravating it dur- ig practice." Guard Werner Hall, however, is still hampered by the pinched nerve in his shoulder which h a s put him out of action the p a s t two weeks. He didn't play during the game last week and Schem- bchler views him as "doubtful" f -the clash with the Badgers. "He's been suiting up for prac- tice but we've kept him out of contact. He just hasn't come along like we've hoped he would," The main reason Hall's injury is of such concern is because it hit the one area which could least stand it. This is the offensive line which had already lost reserve tackles Jim Coode and Tom Pop- lawski for the season due to in- juries. "The offensive line is a prob- lem because we lost two good re- serves in Coode and Poplawski. Now our other reserves have to be switched from position to posi- tion every week as the injury pic- ture shapes up. You can't expect a boy to be able to do his best at a position when he's called upon in a game, if he's been switched around so much," Schembechler observes. "Both lines have depth trouble, but this is why the of- fensive line is the center of it." v Gridde Pickings i I I I scored on a rebound MONTREAL - (Special) - Oui, dit Mme.
