Underground drug-test center
checks for harmful substitutions

An underground drug testing
center which will make cost-
free chemical analyses of drugs
whose contents are uncertain
has been established in A n n
Arbor by candidate f o r state
representative Don Koster.
Koster s a y s he set up the
testing center because he is
concerned about people who use
hallucinatory and other drugs
which a r e not the substance
they are sold as.
Substitutes and additives in
heroin, mescaline, ST?, THC,
amphetamines and other drugs
are "making people sick," claims
Koster. He believes his service
can spot the substitutes a n d
thus prevent those harmful ef-
fects.
The center has not been offi-
cially sanctioned by the police

Staudenmair adds that Koster
is "well aware" that "anytime
anyone is caught with the. drugs
they're subject to prosecution."
But Koster set up his center,
because he believes drug use is
a matter of individual choice,
and that the "drug problem"
can not be solved by passing re-
strictive laws or calling in the
police.
"I think the police understand
they can't solve the drug prob-
lem," Koster says. The only way
to solve the problem, he claims,
is to start telling people t h e
truth and a way to do that is to
tell them what drugs they are
actually taking.

quired to drop it into Koster's
mailbox along, with a made up
nine-digit number. The drug is
then put through a spectrometer
analysis, which reveals what the
drug is composed of.
The person then can call back
in a few days, tell Koster his
number, and Koster will tell
him exactly what is in the drug.
So far, Koster says he has
found the results of his service
rather shocking. Of seven drugs
which were supposedly mesca-
line, none actually were. One
turned out to be aspirin with
food coloring added, while the
others includded such other
drugs as. STP, belladonna, and
LSD.
