HUNTER Rebels clash wi I TV RENTALS $10.50 per month NO DEPOSIT FREE DELIVERY AND SERVICE CALL: NEJAC TV REALS 662-5671 By TERRIFOTUCHEY During the past few weeks every- time a Michigan defensive back was involved in a tackle that also meant he ended up on the bottom of a large pile, head coach Bo Schembechler held his breath as he waited for his back to resur- face. This was necessary because the overall number :of players on the squad caused a lack of depth at several positions and the de- fensive backfield was the first to feel the people pinch. The defensive backfield's prob- lem is approaching the mopping up stage with the forecasted re- turn of Bruce Elliott to semi-reg- ular duty. Elliott, who has been sidelined with a shoulder separa- tion, is viewed by Schembechler'as bting "ready" to fill his wide half- back slot again. However, Schem- saMEMa / THOUSANDS OF FAMOUS LABEL STEREO CLASSICS-JAZZ-FOLK-OPERA bechler does not feel that Elliott is ready to assume the duties of kick and punt returner. The problem of finding enough bodies to add some depth has been transferred to the defensive ends with the loss of Butch Car- penter for the season. . Without Carpenter, the Wol- verines have four healthy ends in the persons of Phil Seymour, Mike Curtis injured Former Michigan All-Amer- ican safety, Ton Curtis, has been placed on the "move" list by the Baltimore Colts and will be out of action for at least six- teen days. Curtis suffered two head injuries in recent prac- tices and since the injuries were similar to ones he incurred at college, it was first thought that-his career might be jIeop- ardized. Keller, and two sophomores, Clint Spearman and Don Eaton. Schembechler still has not de- cided on his starting tailback for, Saturday. "We'll play all of them. We plan to play them all which was our plan last week but (Lance) Scheffler was knocked out' and we had to take him out earlier than we expected and then put Henry in. Doughty has been coming along good and he's inak- ing progress. He gets better every week because all he needs is to get some work." AT THE UNHEARD-0I PRICE; each. SCHWANN CATALOGUE LIST $4.98 PER DISC Convenient Food Mart OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK TILL MIDNIGHT 365 DAYS A YEAR I on North Campus (next to Lums ) rI By BOB ANDREWS It was just one year 'ago when the University of Alabama came from behind in the waning mo- ments to trim the Rebels of Mis- sissippi by a 33-32 score; a n d when one loses by such a close score in a wild and hard fought debacle, a year's span is not nearly long enough to wipe out the painful nemories. Tomorrow, the millions of reg- ular college football fanatics will be afforded th e opportunity to witness the rematch between the Crimson Tide and the Rebels, who are out to avenge last year's heartbreaker. Quarterback Archie Manning, the preseason choice for the top passer in the nation, will lead the Rebels in their quest for sweet revenge. However, he will do so against an Alabama team who af- ter losing to SouthernCalifornia, 42-21, has stormed back with an impressive victory of 51-18 against Virginia Tech and more impres- sively, a 46-15 mauling of t h e Florida Gators. MISSISSIPPI, on the other hand, has been victorious in both of their games, but performed be- low par lasthweek. Against Mem- phis State the Rebels rolled to, a 47-13 triumph, but they barely managed to squeak out a 20-17 win over stubborn Kentucky. The Rebels' hopes obviously rest on the success of Manning against the Alabama defense. In the game agaist Memphis State, Manning displayed his prowess as both a, passer apd a runner, as he ran fora44 yards and two touch- downs and threw for, ,one other, while hitting on 15 of 19 attempts for 167 yards. But he seemed to be well contained by the inspired Kentucky defense, as he complet- ed just twelve of thirty attempts and was intercepted twice. What makes it even tougher for the Heismann trophy candidate is that the Alabama defense 1 a s t week totally stimied Florida's fa- bled John Reaves to Carlos Al- varez combination. It appears that with each successive game, the T i d e defense continually im- proves. However, Manning is much more of a roll-out quarter- back than is Reaves, and his run- ning ability will certainly keep the Alabama defense honest.. SHOULD MANNING be on tar- get, he could he 1 p the Rebels make up the ground they lost in the national rankings, as they fell from fifth to seventh after the narrow escape agalinst Kentucky. The Crimson Tide however, al- so have a quarterback who can be merciless on any opposing de- fense in S c o t t Hunter. In the game against Mississippi last year, Hunter directed his team to the winning score tin the closing min- utes. With Dave Bailey and George Ranager as receivers, Hunter has been deadly as helmsman for the Tide. HUNTER IS ALSO blessed with. a fine running attack led by full- back Dave Brungard, who rushed for over 100 yards against t he Virginia Tech team, and tailback Johnny Musso, who ran' for 84 yards against Florida, 79 of which came in the third quarter. In the first three games, Ala- bama has averaged about 40 - e points a game, and it will take a conserted effort by 01' Miss to contain an offense as potent as theirs. Although the Tide offense seems strong as ever, their defense can be summed up in one word: urn- predictable. In the opener against Southern California, the Alabama defense yielded 485 yards on the ground alone. Yetj in the next two games, it gave up fewer t h a n twenty points per game, includ- ing Just 15 against the powerful Gators. It is this inconsistency display- ed by the Tide defense that makes predicting this contest extremely difficult. If Alabama plays any- where like it did against the Tro- jans, Manning will be, able to'tear it apart, which would be the sweetest revenge he could possibly want. If Hunter and Manning have fine days, the game could end up 'like last year's. A year ago what- ever defense did existwasveIry hard to detect. Tomorrow, these two southeast- ern powers should play their hearts out and could keep their viewers on the edge of their seats to the very end. They may be out to make this contest an annual televised affair. STATE STREET AT NORTH UNIVERSITY Ira I HAPPY HOU ..after the A&M game from 5-7 at the 208 W.
