and order and internal security
that we may instead be losing the
rights of free speech and assem-
bly."
Though thus wary of computers,
Miller acknowledges that they're
a "magnificent" technology that
enables us to do things we've
never done before, to learn about
our society and people and to bet-
ter plan and service them. Still,
he bemoans the fact that we're
not paying attention to the pos-
sibility that they can be misused.
Miller mentioned the disclosure
two weeks ago of an FBI memo-
randum advising agents to keep
on the backs of dissenters, to
make them paranoid. "With just
such an FBI man in every clos-
et," Miller says, "we've already
reached the 1984 George Orwell
was talking about."
If only people would wake up
to the importance of the issue,
says Miller, if they would be-
come more aware that they
are being bambarded with ques-
tionnaires and other intrusions
that they respond to withoat even
realizing what they're doing ...
"Not only are we damaging
ourselves," Miller warns, "but
we're also harming our fellow
man when we give information
freely about our neighbors. In-
formation which, before you
know it, can damage credit, in-
surance, put your name on mail-
ing lists, et al."
"And believe me," he asserts,
"this information moves-it's not
static. There's a subter'anean

that his students be prepared,
he has been kniown to asx them
to leave, just as a judge might
throw out an unprepared lawyer,
he notes.
Miller's appearance as Super
Prof was not the only irae he
"disrupted proceedings." Two
years ago he appeared in class
as Rolo-the-Robot in answer to a
charge that law students were
not being taught practical things
such as how to fill out a sum-
mons. "Since, in Michigan, a
summons is a simple form that
any moron can fill out," Miller

explains, "I dressed up as a con-
pter to emphasize the point."
Another time his attire consist-
ed of the formal old English
courtroom judge garb, complete
with long white curls to negate
an overheard charge that iaw
profs have not style.
"In short," Prof. Miller ex-
plains, "I believe that many aca-
demics take themselves too seri-
ously. Though I advocate class-
room discipline, I also believe
that a few yuk-yuks are in order
when there is an appropriate rea-
son for them."
