GARRIS ON SEX AND SOVIET STRATEGY:
"Now there is a real danger in our country because the propounding of unlimited, unchecked promiscuity, and immorality is the keynote of t
whose wish is to destroy the American way of life and I'd like to tell you in the August issue of the 'Reader's Digest' of 1969 (of) an article (w
says that sexual license is the key to Soviet Strategy. Make no mistake that the Communists have tried and could not overcome this nation in the
nomic field and they have failed. And they have tried different approaches and programs and what you are seeing that is going on in the ci
Ann Arbor, throughout the country, by these radical groups who espouse all these things you are hearing here tonight among which is sexu
cense is the key to Soviet Strategy. They want to destroy the minds and the morals of the youth-the youth who will, tomorrow supposedly takE
reins of government. It's part of a plan-the master plan. And I'll tell you why Mayor Harris should be removed. Because the ordinance that
proposed by Mr. Stephenson to curb the distribution of obscenity which in turn tries to bring forth and induce these kids to have sexual freedo
the streets and everywhere was not passed not because it wasn't a good ordinance, not because it wasn't necessary, but because they stated
didn't think it was constitutional. .."
GARRIS ON POLICE AND MAYOR HARRIS:
... Now, under the ordinance against disorderly conduct it says'no person shall obstruct, resist, hinder, or oppose any member of the policel
or any peace officer in the discharge of his duties as such.' If you will recall the South University incidents, Mayor Harris kept the Ann Arbor P
Department from going up on South University and enforcing the law. He kept them out of there and he with several professors said he wc
maintain law and order.. Now I tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that I've witnessed that demonstration, and Mr. Harris could only address th4
standers and innocent lookers and ask them to leave but the hoodlums that were in the street, climbing on the cars, banging the cars up and f
ing on them and stopping traffic and terrifying the people in those cars he did not say 'Boo.' He didn't tell them to stop it. He didn't send f
away. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Harris and the council have kept the police from doing their job. And he will continue to do it."
GARRIS ON DRUGS:
... What would the Concerned Citizens wish to do to curb the use of marijuana? That since the mayor and his city attorney have taken over t
have been no people who are from these radical groups who have been arrested for marijuana. The prosecutions have had to come from the
secuting Attorney or private complaints. If there was the right mayor, the right councilmen and the right city attorney they would be arreste
der the city ordinances and that would be taken care of."
